Co-occurrence of phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers in dust and hand wipes: A comparison of levels across various sources

Yumeng Shi et al.

Summary: The occupational exposure of e-waste dismantlers to plasticizers, especially non-phthalate (NPAE) plasticizers, is not well understood. This study monitored the concentrations of 11 phthalates (PAEs) and 16 NPAEs in dust and hand wipe samples from e-waste workplaces and ordinary homes in Central China. The results showed that the concentrations of plasticizers in dust from e-waste workplaces were significantly lower than that from ordinary homes, while there was a similar but not significant trend in hand wipes. PAEs were still the dominant plasticizers, with concentrations on average 5.46 and 3.58-fold higher than NPAEs.

Phthalates in dormitory dust and human urine: A study of exposure characteristics and risk assessments of university students

Liting Hua et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentrations of phthalate monoesters in urine samples from university residents and the concentrations of phthalate diesters in dust from corresponding dormitories. The results showed higher levels of phthalate diesters in female residents and suggested that dust could be a significant source of human exposure to phthalate diesters. Furthermore, it is recommended to take measures to reduce the production and application of one specific phthalate diester, DEHP.

Summary: This study collected dust samples from 25 homes during different seasons and identified new chemicals that may have been applied to indoor goods, released into the indoor environment, and accumulated in dust. The study found that higher temperatures in summer may facilitate the release of certain chemicals into the indoor environment.

Summary: Asthma is a common chronic disease globally, and environmental chemicals may increase the risk of asthma and specific sensitization asthma along with other respiratory symptoms. Studies have found associations between PAHs and some pesticides with asthma, but research on many environmental chemicals has produced conflicting results.

Summary: The study aims to investigate internal exposure of workers processing e-waste using human biomonitoring, comparing it to controls. The study protocol includes biomarkers and effect biomarkers detection, with occupational hygiene sampling methods and contextual information collected to facilitate interpretation of results. This protocol can be adapted for future European-wide occupational studies.

The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU): Human biomonitoring guidance values for selected phthalates and a substitute plasticizer

Rosa Lange et al.

Summary: The widespread internal exposure of the European population to plasticizers has sparked the urgent need for toxicological interpretation. The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) has significantly contributed to understanding actual exposure levels and their impact on health. Human biomonitoring guidance values (HBM-GVs) have been derived for various phthalates and a non-phthalate substitute, aiding in health risk assessment.

Christina Christia et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified and validated method was used to quantify six newly identified compounds in residential dust in the Flemish region of Belgium. It was found that DiPGDB was the dominant compound, with toddlers being more exposed than adults. No risk for adverse human health effects was observed from the comparison with DNELs.
