Artificial intelligence in elderly healthcare: A scoping review

Summary: The ageing population has resulted in an increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in elderly healthcare globally. However, there is currently a lack of clarity regarding the types and roles of AI technologies in elderly healthcare. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of AI technologies in elderly healthcare by examining the types of AI technologies employed and identifying their roles based on existing studies. The review found that AI devices used in elderly healthcare included robots, exoskeleton devices, intelligent homes, AI-enabled health applications and wearables, voice-activated devices, and virtual reality. The roles of AI technologies identified were rehabilitation therapists, emotional supporters, social facilitators, supervisors, and cognitive promoters. The results showed that AI technologies have a promising impact on elderly healthcare, meeting the unmet care needs of older adults and demonstrating great potential for further development in this field. Future well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to validate the roles of AI technologies in elderly healthcare.

Owner-manager emotions and strategic responses of small family businesses to the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced family businesses to respond strategically in order to survive, as it is a consensus crisis with profound effects on societies and economies globally. Through in-depth interviews with owner-managers of small family businesses in Cyprus, we examine the role of their emotions in the strategic response to the pandemic. Our findings show that owner-managers have experienced mainly negative emotions during the pandemic, including higher levels of stress, insecurity, fear, and doubt. By reflecting on these emotions, owner-managers can activate affective mechanisms and apply a stewardship logic in their strategic responses.
