A study of wave-driven flow characteristics across a reef under the effect of tidal current

Yu Yao et al.

Summary: Recent field observations have contributed to a better understanding of the influence of tidal currents on wave dynamics over coral reefs. This study conducts detailed flow measurements across an idealized reef profile in a wave-current flume to compare the effects of tidal currents on plunging breakers during flooding and ebbing tides. Laboratory measurements of wave height, mean water level, and cross-shore mean current below wave trough are reported. A numerical wave tank is then established to replicate the laboratory measurements, and the resulting mean flow field and cross-shore distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress are examined through numerical simulations.

Modeling the hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of sandbar migration events

Yashar Rafati et al.

Summary: Several models are available for numerical simulation of nearshore hydrodynamics and morphological evolution in the field of science and engineering. One such model, XBeach, is investigated for its skill in simulating erosion during storms by calibrating against observations of waves, currents, and sandbar migration. The sensitivity of the modeled sediment transport to adjustable coefficients highlights the need for further calibration and improvement to achieve accurate predictions.

Summary: The study on the reef-lagoon system at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, using the SWASH model, revealed that wave forces primarily drive onshore flows near the reef crest, while bottom stress plays a significant role in wave setup inside the lagoon.

Modeled Three-Dimensional Currents and Eddies on an Alongshore-Variable Barred Beach

Christine M. Baker et al.

Summary: The study investigates the circulation patterns in the nearshore region by comparing numerical model simulations with measured bathymetry on a barred beach. It reveals that wave directional spread intensifies small-scale eddies, while bathymetric variability enhances large-scale eddies. The vertical dependence of circulation patterns in the simulations is influenced by turbulence structure, mean shear, and bottom boundary layer dynamics.
