Numerical study of head-on collision of two equal-sized compound droplets

Nang X. Ho et al.

Summary: The present study numerically investigates the dynamics of on-axis collisions of compound droplets using an axisymmetric front-tracking method. The effects of various parameters (such as Reynolds number, Weber number, size of inner droplets, interfacial tension ratio, and eccentricity) on the collision outcomes are examined. Three primary outcomes, namely complete coalescence, outer coalescence, and rebound, are observed. The regime diagrams related to these collision patterns are also presented.

The collision of immiscible droplets in three-phase liquid systems: A numerical study using phase-field lattice Boltzmann method

Adel Ebadi et al.

Summary: This paper employs a ternary phase-field LB model to investigate the collision between two immiscible liquid droplets in a continuous liquid medium. The study considers different cases based on the droplets' density, viscosity, and interfacial tension ratio. The results show that the collision outcomes can be categorized based on the droplets' deformation and behavior, and under specific conditions, encapsulation and satellite droplet formation occur.

Universality of stretching separation

David Baumgartner et al.

Summary: A model is developed to predict the fragmentation limit of drops colliding off-centre, which is excellent over a wide range of liquid properties. The stretching separation is attributed to the extension of the merged drop above a critical aspect ratio influenced by liquid viscosity. The model is then adapted to drop-jet collisions, with similar fragmentation criteria but modified aspect ratio evolution to account for different flow fields and geometry.

Simple extended lattice Boltzmann methods for incompressible viscous single-phase and two-phase fluid flows

Kosuke Suzuki et al.

Summary: The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a numerical method for incompressible viscous fluid flows that has recently seen more complex collision models to enhance numerical stability. This paper proposes simple extended LBMs with good stability using the lattice kinetic scheme (LKS), which is improved by the linkwise artificial compressibility method (LWACM) to reduce high-order dissipation errors in high Reynolds number flows. The study compares the numerical stability and accuracy of LBM, LKS, LWACM, and improved LKS in simulations of high Reynolds number shear layers and two-phase flows with large density ratios.
