The Quaternary volcanogenic landscape and volcaniclastic sediments of the Netherlands Antilles: markers for an in-active volcanic arc

Harald G. Dill et al.

Summary: The Quaternary volcanogenic landscape and sediments of the Netherlands Antilles offer insights into the evolution of the Great Arc of the Caribbean Plate, with implications for understanding volcanic arcs in other regions. By analyzing various geological aspects, researchers can establish a climatic-geomorphological zonation and gain a better understanding of lithological evolution.

The present-day tectonic regimes of the Colombian Andes and the role of slab geometry in intraplate seismicity

Helbert Garcia-Delgado et al.

Summary: Understanding the present-day crustal stress field is crucial for comprehending active deformation in complex intraplate settings. This study aims to improve the understanding of seismotectonics in the Colombian North Andean Block (C-NAB), test the hypothesis that slab geometry controls intraplate stresses, and evaluate the coherence between crustal stresses and strain field data obtained from GPS measurements. The results show that the orientation of maximum horizontal compression (SHmax) is influenced by the oblique subduction of the Nazca Plate, leading to strike-slip faulting south of the slab tear, and thrust-faulting north of the tear. The correlation between SHmax and subducting slabs highlights the relationship between plate geometry, plate motion, and intraplate stresses. Additionally, significant angular differences between SHmax and GPS displacements suggest enhanced strain accumulation and rigid body rotation of the C-NAB north of the slab tear.

Physical and geochemical characteristics of land mud volcanoes along Colombia's Caribbean coast and their societal impacts

Diana Di Luccio et al.

Summary: The Caribbean coast is characterized by the presence of mud volcanoes, which are often located close to tectonic faults and oil and gas deposits. These mud volcanoes are mainly composed of clay sediments and brackish water, facilitating the formation of methane. Despite being considered landscape attractions and therapeutic resources, they also pose serious risks to local communities.

IMA-CNMNC approved mineral symbols

Laurence N. Warr

Summary: This contribution presents the first International Mineralogical Association (IMA) Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) approved collection of 5744 mineral name abbreviations by combining four methods of nomenclature based on the Kretz symbol approach. The collection incorporates 991 previously defined abbreviations for mineral groups and species and presents a further 4753 new symbols that cover all currently listed IMA minerals. Adopting IMA-CNMNC approved symbols is considered a necessary step in standardising abbreviations by employing a system compatible with that used for symbolising the chemical elements.

The mud volcanoes at Santa Barbara and Aragona (Sicily, Italy): a contribution to risk assessment

Alessandro Gattuso et al.

Summary: The Santa Barbara and Aragona areas are affected by mud volcanism which can result in hazardous paroxysmal events. Utilizing digital surface models (DSMs) in 2017, a preliminary hazard assessment was carried out for the first time in these areas. Monitoring stations have been installed to study seismic events and ambient noise frequencies since 2017.
