Control of Axial-Torsional Dynamics of a Distributed Drilling System

Mohammad Amin Faghihi et al.

Summary: In this article, an active control strategy based on a distributed drill-string model is proposed to suppress self-excited vibrations, which are a main cause of failure and efficiency reduction in drilling operations. The drill-string model includes the coupled axial-torsional dynamics through the bit-rock interaction. A compensator is designed as a first step to mitigate reflective waves and eliminate neutral terms and some time delays, followed by the design of a stabilizing controller based on parametric feedback control law. A causal controller is achieved by designing a predictor using only top-side measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is illustrated through a simulation-based case study, demonstrating its robustness against uncertainties and noise.

Prediction-Based Control for Mitigation of Axial-Torsional Vibrations in a Distributed Drill-String System

Shabnam Tashakori et al.

Summary: This article proposed a control strategy to stabilize the axial-torsional dynamics of a distributed drill-string system. The control design is based on an infinite-dimensional model for the vibrational dynamics of the drill string and considers the cutting process and frictional contact effects in the bit-rock interaction model. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in the presence of measurement noise and robustness to parametric uncertainty in the bit-rock interaction were demonstrated in a representative case study.

Suppression of axial-torsional vibrations of a distributed drilling system by the eigenvector contradiction method

Mohammad Amin Faghihi et al.

Summary: This article proposes an active control strategy to suppress self-excited coupled axial-torsional vibrations in a distributed drill-string system. The proposed method utilizes input transformation and the Eigenvector Contradiction Method to design a stabilizing controller, effectively achieving vibration suppression.

3D finite element modelling of drilling: The effect of modelling method

Joshua Priest et al.

Summary: A comprehensive benchmarking study was conducted to evaluate the influence of mesh formulation and chip separation methods on the finite element modeling of large diameter drilling operations. The study found that the updated-Lagrangian with dynamic re-meshing method provided the most accurate predictions, while the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method under-predicted drilling thrust force and torque. The method with element deletion was not recommended due to numerical instabilities and computational costs.
