Effects of hurricane canopy gaps on longleaf pine and upland oak sapling growth

Cody A. Pope et al.

Summary: Longleaf pine forests and woodlands were once dominant in the southeastern U.S. These ecosystems are ecologically important, but the effects of wind disturbance on plant communities are not well understood. We investigated the growth response of competing upland species in a second-growth longleaf pine woodland following Hurricane Michael in southwest Georgia. Our findings suggest that hurricanes can alter the growth dynamics of saplings and potentially reinforce the dominance of longleaf pine in the community structure.

Predicting risks of tornado and severe thunderstorm damage to southeastern US forests

Christine C. Fortuin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify landscape-scale patterns of recurring wind damages and their relationships to topographic attributes, overall climatic patterns, and soil characteristics in southeastern forests. The researchers utilized post-damage assessment data collected by NOAA since 2012 and applied a regularized Generalized Additive Model (GAM) framework to analyze the influencing variables and predict tree damage levels. The results highlighted the importance of terrain characteristics, soil properties, and climatic variables in determining the severity of wind damage in different tree species. The study also identified specific areas at greater risk of severe wind damage in the southeastern United States.

Stand-level structural characteristics dictate hurricane resistance and resilience more than silvicultural regime in longleaf pine woodlands

A. D. Polinko et al.

Summary: Uneven-aged stands are more resistant and resilient to hurricanes than even-aged stands. Different stocking regulation methods can influence hurricane risk in these stands. Therefore, land managers should modify stand prescriptions to increase the resistance and resilience of forests to hurricanes.

Gap-Scale Disturbance Patterns and Processes in a Montane Pinus palustris Woodland

Helena L. Mueller et al.

Summary: Gap-scale disturbances play an important role in successional and structural development patterns in forest ecosystems. In this study, the biophysical characteristics of canopy gaps in a Pinus palustris woodland were quantified to analyze gap-scale disturbance patterns and processes. The majority of gaps were caused by the death of a single tree, with snag-formed gaps being the most common. Most gaps were projected to close through lateral crown expansion of surrounding trees.

Tree, stand, and landscape factors contributing to hurricane damage in a coastal plain forest: Post-hurricane assessment in a longleaf pine landscape

Brandon T. Rutledge et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of hurricanes on forests along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the southern United States, particularly longleaf pine communities. Factors such as tree species, diameter, soil type, and wind exposure were found to influence tree vulnerability to hurricane winds.
