Extrusion process simulation and layer shape prediction during 3D-con-crete-printing using the Particle Finite Element Method

Janis Reinold et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the flow processes and forces during material extrusion in additively manufactured concrete components. The results were validated using laboratory 3D-printing experiments. It was found that the forces generated under the extrusion nozzle could cause deformations in substrate layers, and a novel indicator based on the yielding material was introduced to find optimal 3D-printing parameters to prevent plastic deformations.

Digital design computing and modelling for 3-D concrete printing

Vuong Nguyen-Van et al.

Summary: A novel computational framework for 3D concrete printing process is proposed in this paper to capture layer-by-layer buildability and failure modes of complex structures. The framework is validated to predict printed outcomes accurately and reveal the buildability differences between different structures.

The Slugs-test for extrusion-based additive manufacturing: Protocol, analysis and practical limits

Nicolas Ducoulombier et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel rheological technique for assessing the yield stress of printable materials at nozzle exit in extrusion-based 3D printing. The technique analyzes the non-Newtonian flow at the nozzle exit, which leads to the formation of material drops. By measuring the mass distribution of the drops with a simple balance, the yield stress can be computed, and material homogeneity can be assessed. The technique is experimentally validated on simple materials before application to a real printing system, with equations derived for yield stress computation and discussion on accuracy and applicability range.

Technologies for improving buildability in 3D concrete printing

Shravan Muthukrishnan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic review and original concepts for improving the buildability of concrete. Two methods, additives during initial mixing and buildability enhancement at the print-head by intervention, are discussed. The latter method includes various techniques to rapidly increase the material strength prior to extrusion without affecting pumpability. Future prospects for a new set-on-demand method are also presented.

Ambient temperature cured 'just-add-water' geopolymer for 3D concrete printing applications

Shin Hau Bong et al.

Summary: The research aims to improve the printability performance and mechanical properties of a geopolymer for 3D concrete printing by adjusting the type and dosage of activators and retarders to identify an optimum mixture. The results show that the optimum mixture exhibits excellent performance and energy-saving indicators, contributing to the large-scale applications and commercial viability of geopolymers in 3D concrete printing.
