A review of the development in shale oil and gas wastewater desalination

Simin Zhou et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively summarizes, analyzes, and evaluates the issues related to shale oil and gas waste-water (SOGW) desalination in the shale oil and gas extraction industry. It discusses the water quality characteristics and disposal status of SOGW, reviews various desalination technologies, and explores the use of renewable energy sources and waste heat in driving SOGW desalination. The article also highlights the importance of recovering valuable inorganic resources from SOGW.

Summary: This review provides an overview of analytical methods and treatment technologies for organic matters in shale gas wastewater (SGW). It summarizes specific shale derived organics and related compounds in SGW, as well as the commonly used analytical methods. The review identifies forward osmosis and membrane distillation as the most frequently used treatment processes. It also highlights the need for effective trace organic detection techniques and cost-efficient treatment technologies for SGW.

Lithium extraction from shale gas flowback and produced water using H1.33Mn1.67O4 adsorbent

Lun Tian et al.

Summary: To meet the rapidly growing demand for lithium batteries, lithium was extracted and recovered for the first time from shale gas flowback and produced water (SGFPW) in the Sichuan Basin, China. Precipitation pre-treatment using Na2CO3 was employed to enhance the adsorption capacity and selectivity of lithium. H1.33Mn1.67O4 proved to be a promising adsorbent for lithium extraction, and precipitation before adsorption significantly improved its performance.

Fracturing flowback fluids from shale gas wells in western chongqing: Geochemical analyses and relevance for exploration & development

Yonghong Fu et al.

Summary: Studying the behavior and composition of fracturing flowback water is crucial for understanding in situ water-rock interactions and evaluating the success of fracturing operations. Analysis of flowback water from three wells in western Chongqing revealed that with increasing flowback time, ion concentrations and total salinity increased, and stable isotopic ratios became heavier. The study also showed that the total salinity of the flowback water is a result of mixing high-saline formation water with low-salinity fracturing water.
