Nudging Autonomous Learning Behavior: Three Field Experiments

Robert Weijers et al.

Summary: Autonomous learning behavior is important for students, but they often lack sufficient mastery of it. This study investigates the use of nudging as a teaching strategy in tertiary education to support key autonomous learning behaviors: planning, preparing for class, and asking questions. The researchers co-created three nudges with teachers, including a video booth, a checklist, and a goal-setting nudge. The findings suggest that nudging has potential as an effective teaching strategy, particularly in encouraging asking questions.

I'll Be There: Improving Online Class Attendance with a Commitment Nudge during COVID-19

Robert J. Weijers et al.

Summary: Class attendance is a crucial factor for predicting academic success, but students face behavioral barriers that hinder their attendance. In an experimental study, a commitment intervention was found to improve online attendance among university students. However, the intervention may have been limited by a ceiling effect and selection bias, resulting in negative effects for non-committing students. Future research should explore alternative strategies to enhance online attendance.

Personality traits and stress perception as predictors of students' online engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic

Martyn Quigley et al.

Summary: This study found that students' personality traits and stress perception influence their online engagement in learning. Conscientiousness and extraversion positively predicted all types of online engagement, whereas neuroticism predicted engagement skills, emotional engagement, and performance. Agreeableness and openness to experience respectively predicted participation and emotional engagement. Additionally, stress perceived as a hindrance negatively predicted performance. These results help educators identify students who may require support in their learning.

Nudging is Ineffective When Attitudes Are Unsupportive: An Example from a Natural Field Experiment

Malte Dewies et al.

Summary: In a local government department in the Netherlands, nudges to increase compliance with wearing employee badges were not effective, with some employees holding negative views and finding the nudges paternalistic. This lack of effectiveness may be due to failure to change attitudes about the policy and causing reactance among some employees.

Nudging in education: from theory towards guidelines for successful implementation

Robert J. Weijers et al.

Summary: Nudging is a strategy to influence behavior by changing the environment, which could also be applied in educational contexts. Successful implementation in education requires consideration of long-term effects, underlying processes, and differentiation of nudges into various categories.
