Effect of chitosan on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry growth performance, feed utilization and nutriphysiological status

Magdalena Stanek et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of chitosan supplementation at doses of 1% and 2% on the nutri-physiological status of common carp fry. The results showed that chitosan supplementation significantly influenced the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, alkaline phosphatase, iron, and phosphorus. It also led to changes in the microstructure of the intestine and liver, as well as the mineral profile in the meat. These findings suggest that chitosan has prebiotic and dietary fiber properties.

Effects of Dietary Lentinus edodes Fermentation Supplementation on Digestive Enzyme Activity, Antioxidant Capacity and Morphology of the Liver and Intestine in Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) Fed High Plant Protein Diets

Jiaming Xu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of Lentinus edodes fermentation on digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, and morphology of the liver and intestine in largemouth bass fed high plant protein diets. The results showed that LEF supplementation alleviated liver inflammation and improved liver morphology in largemouth bass. LEF also increased digestive enzyme activity and antioxidant capacity in the liver and intestine.

Chemical composition of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) and its effect on growth performance, feed efficiency and metabolic biochemistry of juvenile hybrid tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus

Yuniel Mendez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The development of alternative plant protein sources in aquaculture is a major challenge due to the high cost and continued shortage of animal protein sources. In this study, the effects of Tithonia diversifolia on the growth performance, feed efficiency, and metabolic biochemistry of Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus juveniles were investigated. The results showed that T. diversifolia flour has an appropriate chemical composition and amino acid balance, without causing negative effects on the growth performance and metabolic biochemistry of the fish.

Potential effects of dietary chitosan against lead-induced innate immunotoxicity and oxidative stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Sally M. Salaah et al.

Summary: This study found that chitosan can alleviate the toxicity of prolonged lead exposure in fish by activating the antioxidant defense system and innate immune responses. Additionally, chitosan minimized the alterations in fish organ histology. The results suggest that chitosan can be a commercial and eco-friendly immunostimulant and bioactive compound for mitigating the effects of heavy metal toxicity in aquaculture.

Mealworm larvae meal in diets for meagre juveniles: Growth, nutrient digestibility and digestive enzymes activity

Filipe Coutinho et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the inclusion of mealworm in the diet led to linearly decreasing growth performance and feed utilization in meagre fish. However, mortality and digestive enzyme activity were not affected by the dietary treatments. Fish fed diets with 20% and 30% mealworm had significantly reduced whole-body protein content and energy compared to fish fed with a control diet.

Dietary chitosan promotes the growth, biochemical composition, gut microbiota, hematological parameters and internal organ morphology of juvenile Barbonymus gonionotus

Mohammad Abdus Salam et al.

Summary: Dietary chitosan significantly improved muscle growth, nutrient and mineral contents, hematological parameters, lactic acid bacterium abundance, and digestive enzyme activities, while inhibiting pathogenic bacteria growth in fish. Increasing dietary chitosan levels enhanced muscle protein content and reduced lipid content. The addition of 1 g kg(-1) dietary chitosan showed the highest benefits for treated B. gonionotus, indicating its potential for safe use in aquaculture.

Essential oils and chitosan as alternatives to chemical preservatives for fish and fisheries products: A review

Md. Ashraf Hussain et al.

Summary: Meeting consumer demands for fresh and safely processed fisheries products free of chemical preservatives is a challenge for the aqua-food industry. Natural preservatives like chitosan and essential oils have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that can extend shelf-life and maintain quality of fish and seafood products. This study highlights recent developments and effective use of natural preservatives in the aqua-food industry, while addressing the harmful impacts of chemical preservatives and noting research gaps in Southeast Asian countries.
