People differ in their sensitivity to the environment: An integrated theory, measurement and empirical evidence

Michael Pluess et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated theoretical perspective on Environmental Sensitivity and provides new empirical evidence. Results from three studies show that sensitivity can be measured reliably and validly with the 12-item Highly Sensitive Person scale (HSP-12). People scoring high on the HSP-12 are more sensitive to both adverse and positive experiences. The findings confirm the theoretical proposition that people differ in their sensitivity to environmental influences, and propose future directions for research.

Roles of recalled parenting experiences and effortful control in adult daily emotion regulation

Jaakko Tammilehto et al.

Summary: Research examines the associations between childhood experiences with parents and effortful control with adult emotion regulation. The study focuses on the role of recalled parenting experiences and effortful control in daily selection and implementation of emotion regulation strategies. Findings suggest that recalled parental warmth predicts less suppression and rumination, while recalled overcontrol, especially from fathers, predicts greater suppression and reappraisal. However, recalled parenting experiences do not predict the effectiveness of emotion regulation implementation, and effortful control does not mediate the relationship between recalled parenting experiences and emotion regulation.

Watching a video of nature reduces negative affect and rumination, while positive affect is determined by the level of sensory processing sensitivity

Eimer Cadogan et al.

Summary: Natural environments have positive effects in reducing rumination, improving affect, and restoring depleted cognitive abilities. Individual differences in susceptibility to these effects, particularly in those with higher Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), need further study. In a pre-post study, researchers evaluated the impact of virtual nature exposure on affect, rumination, and executive functions in individuals with varying levels of SPS. The results suggest that a brief virtual nature intervention can reduce negative affectivity and rumination, and increase positive affect, especially in those with high SPS.

Social anxiety is associated with greater peripheral oxytocin reactivity to psychosocial stress

Benjamin A. Tabak et al.

Summary: Establishing reliable biomarkers associated with specific forms of psychopathology has been challenging. Social anxiety, for example, is linked to inconsistent biological responses, making it crucial to identify more reliable biomarkers. Oxytocin and vasopressin are potential candidates, but it remains unclear if they are modulated by social anxiety in response to psychosocial stress.

Interferon and anti-TNF therapies differentially modulate amygdala reactivity which predicts associated bidirectional changes in depressive symptoms

Kevin A. Davies et al.

Summary: Patients receiving IFN-α treatment for Hepatitis-C showed significant increase in depressive symptoms at 4 weeks, whereas those receiving anti-TNF therapy for inflammatory arthritis exhibited marked improvement in depressive symptoms at 24 hours and 12 weeks. The study found that both IFN-α and anti-TNF significantly modulated amygdala reactivity, with IFN-α enhancing right amygdala responses to sad faces and anti-TNF decreasing right amygdala reactivity.

Environmental sensitivity and cardiac vagal tone as moderators of the relationship between family support and well-being in low SES children: An exploratory study

Ughetta Moscardino et al.

Summary: This study explored the moderating effects of Environmental Sensitivity and cardiac vagal tone on the association between perceived family support and child well-being in low SES families. It found that highly sensitive children with higher resting CVT reported better well-being in poorly supportive family environments. Additionally, children reported high levels of well-being regardless of their levels of vagal activity or sensitivity in high supportive family environments.

Psychometric properties of the PERMA-Profiler as hedonic and eudaimonic well-being measure in an Italian context

Barbara Giangrasso

Summary: The study found that the Italian version of the PERMA-Profiler has good psychometric properties consistent with the original version and Seligman's PERMA model. Despite a low correlation between Ryff's Autonomy subscale and PERMA subscales, there is a strong relationship between the overall dimensions of both scales.
