Tracking PM2.5 and O3 Pollution and the Related Health Burden in China 2013-2020

Qingyang Xiao et al.

Summary: Based on exposure data sets, this study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in PM2.5 and O3 exposures during 2013-2020, finding a decrease in national PM2.5 exposure but worsened O3 pollution. The improved air quality led to a reduction in premature deaths related to both long- and short-term exposures compared to 2013, with a greater reduction in long-term exposure-related deaths observed in 2017-2020 due to the nonlinear exposure-response curve. Efforts are needed for coordinated control of PM2.5 and O3 for future air quality improvements.

Cost increase in the electricity supply to achieve carbon neutrality in China

Zhenyu Zhuo et al.

Summary: The Chinese government has set goals for carbon neutrality and renewable energy development in the power sector. However, due to the intermittency and increased investment costs of renewable energy, electricity costs will increase. According to the study, a significant amount of wind and solar photovoltaic capacity will be needed by 2050 to achieve carbon neutrality in China's power system, resulting in increased electricity supply costs.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different strategies under low-carbon scenarios on health co-benefits and finds that the size and distribution of health benefits are influenced by technology and fuel-switching decisions. The building electrification focused decarbonization strategy shows greater total health benefits compared to the truck electrification focused strategy, but the latter is more beneficial for socially and economically disadvantaged communities.

Plant-level mitigation strategies could enable carbon neutrality by 2060 and reduce non-CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel sector

Zhaoling Li et al.

Summary: Achieving carbon neutrality in the iron and steel industry requires feasible mitigation measures at the plant level. This study focuses on China and assesses decarbonization pathways at the plant level, finding that a combination of tax policy, environmental policy, and low-carbon electricity generation can transform the industry and reduce CO2 emissions. The results show that renewable and hydrogen-sourced energy can contribute significantly and lead to a reduction in air pollutants and mercury emissions.

North China Plain as a hot spot of ozone pollution exacerbated by extreme high temperatures

Pinya Wang et al.

Summary: The North China Plain is identified as a hot spot of coupled extremes in surface ozone and heat. The number of days with both ozone pollution and high temperature extremes is increasing in this region. These coupled extremes have more severe health impacts on humans compared to ozone pollution days occurring individually, and the higher temperatures play a major role in driving these health effects.

Health co-benefits of climate change mitigation depend on strategic power plant retirements and pollution controls

Dan Tong et al.

Summary: Reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel- and biomass-fired power plants not only benefits climate and public health, but also has significant implications for future deaths, especially in low-income or emerging economies. Strategic retirements of super-polluting power plants and deployment of pollution control technologies are necessary to minimize future deaths and should be an important consideration in designing and implementing climate-energy policies.

Incorporating health co-benefits into technology pathways to achieve China's 2060 carbon neutrality goal: a modelling study

Shihui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that a sole dependence on improving air pollution control measures is not enough for all Chinese provinces to meet the WHO PM2.5 standards by 2060. A combination of strong climate and air pollution control policies is needed for substantial improvement of air quality across China. With the realization of carbon neutrality goals, China has the potential to increase life expectancy by 0.88-2.80 years per person in 2060, and the health benefits could outweigh mitigation costs, indicating the cost-effectiveness of China's carbon neutrality goal.

Pathways of China's PM2.5 air quality 2015-2060 in the context of carbon neutrality

Jing Cheng et al.

Summary: According to the study, China can achieve its near-term climate goals by 2030 through fulfilling its National Determined Contributions (NDC) pledges and continuing air pollution control policies. However, reducing PM2.5 exposure to below 10 μg/m3 for the majority of the Chinese population by 2060 may require more ambitious climate mitigation efforts, such as China's carbon neutrality goals and global 1.5 degrees C-pathways. The research highlights the critical role of China's carbon neutrality goals in reducing air pollution exposure to the level of the World Health Organization guidelines and protecting public health.

Analysis showed that end-of-pipe control policies significantly reduced PM2.5-related deaths in China, with mandated emission control technologies avoiding nearly three-quarters of the deaths that would have occurred due to increased economic activity.
