Chitosan based antioxidant biofilm with waste Citrus limetta pomace extract and impregnated with halloysite nanotubes for food packaging

Harshi Singhi et al.

Summary: In order to mitigate the health risks associated with the use of plastic films for food preservation, new functional films derived from non-toxic and antioxidant biosources need to be developed. This study developed chitosan-based active antioxidant films by incorporating halloysite nanotubes and Citrus limetta pomace extract. The addition of the extract resulted in thicker films with improved elongation ratio and reduced tensile strength. The optimal film with 20% LPE exhibited 80.42% antioxidant properties.

Opportunities and Challenges for Lignin Valorization in Food Packaging, Antimicrobial, and Agricultural Applications

Alice Boarino et al.

Summary: The exploration of renewable resources is crucial for achieving a more sustainable materials economy, and the utilization of lignin can play a vital role in this transition. Lignin, which accounts for approximately one-third of lignocellulosic biomass, is abundantly available as a waste product from biofuel and paper production. However, the majority of lignin is currently burned as low-value fuel, despite its valuable properties and potential applications. This Perspective focuses on the opportunities and challenges of employing lignin-based materials in food packaging, antimicrobial, and agricultural applications.

KEGG for taxonomy-based analysis of pathways and genomes

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a manually curated database resource that integrates various biological objects classified into systems, genomic, chemical, and health information. Through the KEGG identifier and URL links, users can retrieve and browse information for different biological objects, including pathway maps, hierarchy, and genomes. KEGG has also improved KO assignment annotation and included more eukaryotic genomes for better representation of organisms in the taxonomic tree. The taxonomy mapping enables analysis of the conservation of functional and physical links among genes in different organism groups.

Risk Assessment of Trigonelline in Coffee and Coffee By-Products

Nick Konstantinidis et al.

Summary: Trigonelline is a bioactive pyridine alkaloid found in high concentrations in coffee and coffee by-products. The use of coffee by-products as food has gained interest due to their economic and nutritional value and environmental benefits. This review aimed to assess the risk of acute and chronic exposure to trigonelline from coffee and coffee by-products on human health. Limited toxicological knowledge and a lack of human data make it difficult to draw conclusions. However, trigonelline ingested as part of coffee and coffee by-products appears to be safe based on their traditional use.

Sustainable Starch/Lignin Nanoparticle Composites Biofilms for Food Packaging Applications

Xunwen Sun et al.

Summary: Construction of sustainable composite biofilms by incorporating lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) as green nanofillers into starch films shows great promise for advanced packaging applications. The seamless combination of bio-nanofiller with biopolymer matrix, enabled by uniform nanofiller size and strong interfacial hydrogen bonding, results in enhanced mechanical properties, thermal stability, antioxidant activity, and UV shielding performance. The composite films also effectively delay the oxidative deterioration of soybean oil during storage. Overall, this work presents a simple and effective method for preparing starch-based films with enhanced antioxidant and barrier properties for advanced food packaging applications.
