Genetic diversity and structure of Eurasian otters on Kinmen Island

Nian-Hong Jang-Liaw et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic diversity and structure of wild Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) on Kinmen Island, China were analyzed using high-quality DNA samples from 40 individuals. Mitochondrial DNA sequencing revealed no nucleotide diversity among the samples. However, genotyping at microsatellite loci showed no deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and no inbreeding depression. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Kinmen otter population is most genetically similar to a now-extinct population in Taiwan and forms a monophyletic group with southern Chinese populations. These findings can inform conservation programs for Eurasian otters in the Kinmen region.

Summary: This study compared whole genome sequencing and microsatellite genotyping for the study of Eurasian otters. The results showed that whole genome sequencing provided more genetic information and higher resolution, revealing previously unknown genetic diversity and lineage differences. This study has important implications for understanding population structure and genetic diversity in otters.

Spatio-temporal distribution pattern and the correlation with key environmental factors of Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Northeast China

Minhao Chen et al.

Summary: This study revised and supplemented the historical distribution records of the Eurasian otter in Northeast China and reconstructed its distribution pattern over the past 70 years. The results showed a decline in both the distribution and occurrence record of otters in the region. The study also found correlations between the distribution pattern and environmental factors, such as precipitation and land use.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the phylogenetic status of Iranian populations relative to other populations of Eurasia. The results showed that the Iranian populations are genetically related to the populations in Russia and China, and the Caucasus region may have played an important role as a refuge during glacial cycles.

Genetic diversity and population history of the Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) based on the genome-wide analyses

Takushi Kishida et al.

Summary: The genetic analysis of the Japanese black bear reveals that the population is genetically uniform and has only recently undergone structuring. This study also suggests ancestral admixture between the Japanese black bear and the Ussuri black bear, indicating a complex history of inter-subspecies interactions. The low genetic diversity of the Japanese black bear compared to other bear populations highlights the urgent need for its conservation.

Summary: Otter populations in Southeast Asia are threatened by various factors, but there is a lack of reliable data on them. This study used mitochondrial DNA analysis of otter fecal samples to identify species and assess genetic diversity. It found that the widely distributed Eurasian otter and the Asian small-clawed otter were present, providing important baseline insights into otter population diversity.

Extrinsically reinforced hybrid speciation within Holarctic ermine (Mustela spp.) produces an insular endemic

Jocelyn P. Colella et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of at least three species within the Holarctic ermine complex, corresponding to three of four genetic clades associated with diversification in separate glacial refugia. Significant geographic variation was found within each species, with geometric morphometric results largely consistent with historical infraspecific taxonomy.

Summary: The study conducted a systematic analysis of the mtDNA of Eurasian lynx, revealing three major clades and at least five lineages, indicating an earlier diversification of the species than previously estimated. The results suggest that the Anatolian peninsula served as a glacial refugium for the Eurasian lynx, with previously unconsidered implications for the species' colonization of Europe.
