Field-theoretic functional renormalization group formalism for non-Fermi liquids and its application to the antiferromagnetic quantum critical metal in two dimensions

Francisco Borges et al.

Summary: To capture the universal low-energy physics of metals within effective field theories, we develop a field-theoretic functional renormalization group formalism for full low-energy effective field theories of non-Fermi liquids. The formalism is applied to the non-Fermi liquid that arises at the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in two space dimensions. In theories deformed with non-zero nesting angles, coupling functions acquire universal momentum profiles controlled by the bare nesting angles at low energies before flowing to superconducting states in the low-energy limit.

Incoherent transport in a model for the strange metal phase: Memory-matrix formalism

Emile Pangburn et al.

Summary: We revisit a phenomenological model that describes the strange metal phase in cuprates, where fermions are coupled to fluctuating bosons arising from finite-momentum particle-particle pairs. In the non-Fermi-liquid phase, incoherent bosons dominate the transport properties, such as resistivity and optical conductivity. Through the Kubo formalism, we find that the resistivity exhibits approximately linear behavior with temperature and the optical conductivity follows a Drude form, with the Drude lifetime inversely proportional to temperature. We use the memory-matrix approach to compute the transport properties of these bosons, which successfully captures the hydrodynamic regime and provides a suitable framework for describing the transport coefficients in the strange metal phase.

Charge fluctuations, hydrodynamics, and transport in the square-lattice Hubbard model

J. Vucicevic et al.

Summary: Recent experimental results indicate that a specific hydrodynamic theory can describe charge fluctuations in the square-lattice Hubbard model at long wavelengths. The correlation between charge and current is directly determined by the parameters of the hydrodynamic model, which in turn determine the optical conductivity. The validity of the proposed hydrodynamic theory is investigated across the entire parameter range of the Hubbard model, and it is found to be consistent with numerical data in both weak and strong coupling regimes.

Raman response and shear viscosity in the non-Fermi liquid phase of Luttinger semimetals

Ipsita Mandal et al.

Summary: Luttinger semimetals are materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, displaying doubly-degenerate quadratic band touchings. In the presence of Coulomb interactions, a non-Fermi liquid phase can emerge. This study focuses on extracting the Raman response as experimental evidence for this emergent state.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and beyond: Window into non-Fermi liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and its relevance to nonFermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The study explores the phase diagrams of models with local electronic correlations, which display SYK physics. It also investigates the connection between the SYK model and theories of sharp Fermi surfaces without quasiparticles. Furthermore, the review provides an overview of the links between the SYK model and quantum gravity.

Low-frequency Raman response near the Ising-nematic quantum critical point: A memory-matrix approach

Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: Recent Raman scattering experiments have discovered a quasielastic peak in FeSe1-xSx near an Ising-nematic quantum critical point. The peak appears at subtemperature frequencies and softens as temperature decreases towards the quantum critical point. This behavior is inconsistent with impurity scattering and suggests the involvement of quantum critical fluctuations. In this study, the researchers incorporate these effects using a memory matrix approach and find that the quasielastic peak is associated with the relaxation of an Ising-nematic deformation of the Fermi surface. The dynamical scattering rate of this deformation is found to be proportional to the product of the quasielastic peak frequency and the Ising-nematic thermodynamic susceptibility. They also observe a quasilinear dependence of the scattering rate on temperature over a broad temperature range, in agreement with experimental results.

Incoherent transport across the strange-metal regime of overdoped cuprates

J. Ayres et al.

Summary: Strange metals exhibit unconventional electrical properties such as linear resistivity, inverse Hall angle, and linear magnetoresistance. Research suggests that these anomalies in cuprates may be related to a quantum critical point inside the superconducting dome, extending beyond the critical doping level. The presence of two charge sectors, one with coherent quasiparticles and the other with scale-invariant 'Planckian' dissipators, indicates a complex behavior in the strange-metal regime.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the thermoelectric and thermal transport coefficients in the weakly disordered non-Fermi liquid phase of Luttinger semimetals. We found unconventional characteristics in the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric coefficient, which are key signatures of the long sought-after non-Fermi liquid state.

Transport in the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model: Lessons from weak coupling

Thomas G. Kiely et al.

Summary: The study indicates that in the Fermi-Hubbard model, for generic filling, the high-temperature limiting behaviors of electrical and thermal resistivities persist down to temperatures near the hopping matrix element T, while at half filling, anomalous low-temperature scattering results in nearly T-linear electrical resistivity. These findings suggest a continuous connection between T-linear resistivity observed in recent cold atom experiments and weak coupling physics.

Strange metal from incoherent bosons

Anurag Banerjee et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the breakdown of the celebrated Fermi liquid theory in the strange metal phase and proposes a phenomenological boson-fermion model to address this issue. The model shows a T log T dependence of resistivity with temperature and exhibits the Drude form of the ac conductivity. Moreover, the bosonic excitations emerging from finite-momentum pairs of spin-triplet symmetry reproduce the linear-in-field magnetoresistance observed in optimally doped and overdoped cuprates.

Analytical solution for time integrals in diagrammatic expansions: Application to real-frequency diagrammatic Monte Carlo

J. Vucicevic et al.

Summary: Recent advances in diagrammatic Monte Carlo methods for interacting fermions on a lattice have shown promising results by using symbolic algebra algorithms to solve internal Matsubara frequency summations of Feynman diagrams. A new approach using a closed-form analytical solution of imaginary-time integrals has demonstrated improved results and significant advantages, making the algorithm general enough for various single-time correlation function series. Tuning the action-shift in frequency-resolved manner has further improved convergence properties of the method with only a few perturbation orders, suggesting broader usage of the analytical solution in commonly used Monte Carlo algorithms.
