Additive manufacturing of anti-bacterial and low-cost Ti-Mo(-Ag) alloys using elemental powders through in situ laser alloying

J. Y. Xu et al.

Summary: This study focused on mitigating the high cost of pre-alloyed Ti-15Mo powder by using an in situ laser alloying approach. The Ti-15Mo alloy with a high relative density was successfully printed. The addition of Ag in situ resulted in antibacterial properties without compromising cell viability.

In-situ synthesis of high strength and toughness TiN/Ti6Al4V sandwich composites by laser powder bed fusion under a nitrogen-containing atmosphere

Yunmian Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, TiN/Ti6Al4V sandwich structural materials were manufactured using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing in different ratios of nitrogen and argon. The in-situ synthesis between N and Ti atoms produced TiN, which exhibited a good metallurgical bond with the Ti6Al4V matrix. The combination of a bio-inspired lamellar structure and internal ceramic particle reinforcement enhanced the mechanical properties of the TiN/Ti6Al4V sandwich composite materials.

Laser surface alloying of titanium alloy with silver: Microstructure, hardness and corrosion property

Q. Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, silver (Ag) was surface-alloyed in TC4 alloy (Ti6Al4V) using a high-power diode laser (HPDL). The Ag content in the alloyed layers was controlled from 5 to 24 wt%. The microstructure, hardness, and corrosion properties of the alloyed layers were influenced by the Ag content. The hardness of TC4 alloy increased to a maximum value of 569 HV0.2 when laser surface-alloyed with 14 wt% Ag, but decreased to 456 HV0.2 when the Ag content was increased to 24 wt%, due to the formation of a soft Ag-rich phase. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of the laser surface-alloyed TC4 with high Ag content decreased, attributed to micro-galvanic effect between the alpha-Ti and Ti2Ag, TiAg, and Ag-rich phase.

Enhanced mechanical, bio-corrosion, and antibacterial properties of Ti-Cu alloy by forming a gradient nanostructured surface layer

Mian Chen et al.

Summary: A gradient nanostructured surface (GNS) layer was formed on Ti-Cu alloy using surface ultrasonic rolling treatment (SURT) to improve its comprehensive performance. The GNS Ti-Cu surface mainly consists of Cu2O and TiO2, with improved wettability. The GNS layer enhances mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, antibacterial properties, and cell compatibility. This study demonstrates the great application potential of GNS Ti-Cu alloy in the field of metallic biomaterial.

Strengthening and fracture mechanisms of a precipitation hardening high-entropy alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Yaowen Wu et al.

Summary: A precipitation hardening high-entropy alloy (HEA) (FeCoNi)(86)Al7Ti7 fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) and aging treatment showed significantly increased yield strength due to the coherent precipitates. Furthermore, the ductility decreased with the volume fraction of incoherent precipitates. Additionally, a new fracture mode, intercellular fracture, was proposed and validated through microstructural examination.

Sequential activation of M1 and M2 phenotypes in macrophages by Mg degradation from Ti-Mg alloy for enhanced osteogenesis

Luxin Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inflammatory response and osteogenic performance of macrophages on a Ti-0.625 Mg alloy in vitro and in vivo. The results showed sequential activation of M1 and M2 phenotypes in macrophages on the Ti-0.625 Mg alloy, leading to the promotion of osteoblast-like cell maturation. The Ti-0.625 Mg alloy also exhibited better anti-inflammatory response and regenerative potential in vivo.

Factors controlling segregation tendency of solute Ti, Ag and Ta into different symmetrical tilt grain boundaries of tungsten: First-principles and experimental study

Ahmed Tamer AlMotasem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the segregation behavior of solute atoms in W grain boundaries through experimental and computational approaches. It was found that Ti and Ta tend to segregate towards the core of high-angle grain boundaries, while Ag shows a preference for segregation in and around the grain boundary plane. The electronic contribution plays a dominant role in the solution energy, with d-valence electron hybridization playing a significant role in stabilizing bonds between W and Ta. Contrary to the electronegativity rule, Ag atoms gain charge from neighboring W atoms.

Study of Ag precipitation and mechanical properties of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy

Jun-Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The Ti-25Ta-xAg alloy can form a stable ternary alloy system with Ag precipitation at the grain boundary. Through first-principles calculations, it was found that the critical temperature for Ag precipitation in the Ti-Ta-Ag alloy is around 2200 K. Additionally, changes in lattice constants and mechanical properties occur when the Ag solid solubility reaches x=0.8, due to a shift in the electronic states of Ag. These findings offer theoretical guidance for the application of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloys in biomedicine.
