Surface modification of natural clay with H2O2 for high adsorption of acid Red 114: Experimental and modelling studies

Pascal S. Thue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption performance of natural montmorillonite clay treated with H2O2 (MMT-H2O2) as an adsorbent to remove Acid Red 114 (AR-114) from aqueous solutions. The treated clay showed higher oxygen content and better adsorption capacity. Computational adsorption results suggest that AR-114 molecules adsorbed onto the surface site of the treated clay in a perpendicular orientation, indicating the endothermic accumulation of dye molecules on the clay surface through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding.

Selective adsorption of gadolinium from real leachate using a natural bentonite clay

Guilherme L. Dotto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the recovery of Gd3+ from real leachate of phosphogypsum using natural bentonite clay. The adsorption study revealed that the clay has typical bentonite characteristics and can effectively adsorb Gd3+. The kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption process were analyzed, and it was found that the Langmuir model and Avrami fractional order model were suitable for describing the adsorption isotherms and kinetic data, respectively. The study also showed that citric acid was an efficient desorbing agent for Gd3+ from the bentonite, and the clay could selectively recover Gd3+ from the real leachate of phosphogypsum.

Shiitake cultivation as biological preprocessing of lignocellulosic feedstocks-Substrate changes in crystallinity, syringyl/guaiacyl lignin and degradation-derived by-products

Feng Chen et al.

Summary: In a study investigating the effects of different hardwood substrates and nitrogen modulation on the biological preprocessing of lignocellulosic feedstock by shiitake mushroom cultivation, it was found that nitrogen loading played a more significant role than wood species in mushroom production and lignocellulose degradation. The addition of whey, which modulated nitrogen content, resulted in higher mushroom yields. Low nitrogen content promoted increased delignification.

A comparative study of chemical treatment by MgCl2, ZnSO4, ZnCl2, and KOH on physicochemical properties and acetaminophen adsorption performance of biobased porous materials from tree bark residues

Glaydson S. dos Reis et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel biobased carbon material was synthesized using different single-step pyrolysis chemical methods. The use of different chemical activators resulted in materials with different physicochemical characteristics and acetaminophen adsorption performance. The materials exhibited high specific surface areas and abundant active sites, allowing for ultrafast removal of acetaminophen pollutants. Furthermore, the samples showed good regenerability and efficient removal of synthetic effluents.

Microalgae biomass as a sustainable precursor to produce nitrogen-doped biochar for efficient removal of emerging pollutants from aqueous media

Maria Gonzalez-Hourcade et al.

Summary: A novel nitrogen-doped carbon material was synthesized using microalgae as a carbon precursor and phosphoric acid as an activation agent. The nitrogen-doped biochar exhibited increased specific surface area and micropore percentage compared to the non-doped biochar. The nitrogen-doped biochar showed the highest efficiency in adsorbing acetaminophen and treating synthetic effluents, with a maximum sorption capacity of 120.7 mg g^-1. Pore-filling was identified as the dominant adsorption mechanism for acetaminophen.

Hardwood spent mushroom substrate-based activated biochar as a sustainable bioresource for removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater

Alejandro Grimm et al.

Summary: This study utilized hardwood spent mushroom substrate to prepare activated biochars using phosphoric acid. The results showed that the biochars had high specific surface area and mesopore percentage, with oxygen and phosphorus functional groups on their surfaces. They exhibited efficient adsorption performance for acetaminophen and simulated pharmaceutical effluents. However, the adsorption capacity of the biochars decreased after multiple cycles.
