Metal Mixing in the r-process Enhanced Ultrafaint Dwarf Galaxy Reticulum II

Alexander P. Ji et al.

Summary: The ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Renticulum II experienced a rare and prolific r-process event, providing a unique opportunity to study metal mixing in a relic first galaxy. The study found that approximately 72-82% of the stars in Reticulum II were r-process enhanced, indicating bursty star formation in this ultrafaint dwarf galaxy.

Timing the r-process Enrichment of the Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy Reticulum II

Joshua D. Simon et al.

Summary: The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret II) has a unique chemical evolution history with r-process elements. Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope reveal that Ret II experienced two bursts of star formation, one before the epoch of reionization and the other about 3 billion years later. The presence of r-process-enhanced stars suggests that the r-process elements in Ret II were synthesized early in its star-forming phase and played no role in delayed events like GW170817.

Inhomogeneous Galactic chemical evolution: modelling ultra-faint dwarf galaxies of the Large Magellanic Cloud

R. K. Alexander et al.

Summary: Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are metal-poor galaxies without gas, and understanding the chemical abundance dispersion in these extreme environments can provide insights into the first generations of stars. The i-getool model is applied to two UFDs, Carina II and Reticulum II, to study their chemical evolution. The model considers the Monte Carlo sampling of the initial mass function and the chemical enrichment of supernova bubbles in the interstellar medium. The model successfully predicts the abundance patterns of alpha- and odd-Z elements, but underestimates carbon and titanium abundances due to the uncertainty in stellar nucleosynthesis yields. The model also suggests galactic outflows driven by supernova feedback, which quench star formation activity.

How much metal did the first stars provide to the ultra-faint dwarfs?

Mahsa Sanati et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies have been unsuccessful in reproducing the observed metallicity-luminosity relation, including ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs). This study investigates how the first generations of metal-free stars (Pop III) could increase the mean metallicity of small and faint galaxies. By conducting chemo-dynamical simulations of 19 halos, the necessary conditions for the formation of Pop III stars in mini-halos are identified and constraints on metal ejection schemes are derived. The inclusion of Pop III stars with specific mass ranges increases the metallicity of UFDs, but fails to fully resolve the discrepancy with observations.

Discovery of a New Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Candidate in UNIONS: Bootes V

Simon E. T. Smith et al.

Summary: We have discovered a new ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate called Bootes V. It was detected as a resolved overdensity of stars during an ongoing search for new Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates in the UNIONS photometric data set. Bootes V has a physical half-light radius of 26.9(-5.4)(+7.5) pc, a V-band magnitude of -4.5 +/- 0.4 mag, and is located at a heliocentric distance of approximately 100 kpc. Using Gaia DR3 astrometry, we have identified member stars, characterized the systemic proper motion, and confirmed the reality of this faint stellar system. The spectroscopic analysis shows that Bootes V is larger, more distant, and more metal-poor than most globular clusters, suggesting that it is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy but further studies are needed for definitive classification.

Six More Ultra-faint Milky Way Companions Discovered in the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey

W. Cerny et al.

Summary: We have discovered six ultra-faint Milky Way satellites using Dark Energy Camera (DECam) data from the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) survey. These candidates have faint absolute magnitudes and old, metal-poor stellar populations. Based on their morphologies, three of them are likely ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, while the other three are probably ultra-faint star clusters. We have also measured the proper motion of some of these systems and found possible associations with other known structures in the Milky Way.

Metallicity Distribution Function of the Eridanus II Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy from Hubble Space Telescope Narrowband Imaging

Sal Wanying Fu et al.

Summary: By using deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CaHK imaging, this study measures the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the dwarf galaxy Eridanus II (Eri II) in the Local Group. The results show that Eri II has a consistent metallicity with spectroscopic MDFs, and the study identifies extremely metal-poor star candidates. The orbital history of Eri II is also computed, suggesting it is on its first infall into the Milky Way. The study emphasizes the power of HST CaHK imaging for MDF measurements of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs).

Stellar mass segregation as separating classifier between globular clusters and ultrafaint dwarf galaxies

H. Baumgardt et al.

Summary: We have studied stellar mass segregation in over 50 globular clusters and ultrafaint dwarf galaxy candidates and found that the amount of segregation is strongly correlated with relaxation time. Globular clusters with relaxation times equal to or longer than their ages show little to no mass segregation, indicating that they formed without primordial mass segregation. Ultrafaint dwarf galaxy candidates can be divided into segregated star clusters and unsegregated dark-matter dominated dwarf galaxies, with the segregation being influenced by initial conditions and the ability to withstand external tidal forces.

EDGE: The sensitivity of ultra-faint dwarfs to a metallicity-dependent initial mass function

Mateo Prgomet et al.

Summary: This study investigates how a metallicity-dependent initial mass function affects the feedback budget and observables of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. It found that the metallicity dependence of the initial mass function can significantly reduce the final stellar mass of galaxies while maintaining a nearly constant iron content, providing a mechanism for producing low-mass yet enriched dwarf galaxies.

The Pristine dwarf galaxy survey - IV. Probing the outskirts of the dwarf galaxy Bootes I

Nicolas Longeard et al.

Summary: This study presents a new spectroscopic analysis of the dwarf galaxy Boo I using data from the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Through the combination of Gaia and Pristine survey data, the researchers successfully discovered 27 new Boo I stars and determined their metallicities. The findings also revealed velocity and metallicity gradients, as well as a higher ellipticity for Boo I. These results suggest that Boo I may have been affected by tidal forces.

Exploring metallicity-dependent rates of Type Ia supernovae and their impact on galaxy formation

Pratik J. Gandhi et al.

Summary: Type la supernovae play a crucial role in feedback and elemental enrichment in galaxies. Recent surveys have found that the rate of supernova la in lower mass galaxies may be higher than in the Milky Way. The study suggests that models in which the supernova la rate increases with decreasing metallicity provide better agreement with observations. These findings are important for understanding galaxy formation.

The Pristine survey - XVI. The metallicity of 26 stellar streams around the Milky Way detected with the STREAMFINDER in Gaia EDR3

Nicolas F. Martin et al.

Summary: This study uses photometric metallicities from the Pristine survey to investigate the existence and determine the metallicities of stellar streams found using the STREAMFINDER algorithm on Gaia Early Data Release 3. All 26 streams in Pristine show clear metallicity distributions, supporting the authenticity of these structures and the effectiveness of STREAMFINDER and Pristine in finding and measuring metallicities. The study identifies six candidate structures with coherent phase-space and metallicity signals that are likely to be stellar streams. Most of the studied streams are very metal-poor, potentially originating from low-luminosity dwarf galaxies or globular clusters with significantly lower metallicity than any known Milky Way globular cluster. The study highlights the importance of high-quality photometric metallicities in utilizing Gaia data for Galactic Archeology studies, enabling a closer examination of the early stages of our Galaxy's formation and its stellar halo constituents.
