Prevalence and Infection Intensity of Human and Animal Tungiasis in Napak District, Karamoja, Northeastern Uganda

Summary: Tungiasis is a highly prevalent condition in resource-poor communities in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, with limited data to guide control measures. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Uganda before piloting an integrated tungiasis control program, revealing a high prevalence of tungiasis in humans with an S-curve pattern based on age. Animal tungiasis occurred less frequently, with pigs being the most commonly affected species. Effective control measures should adopt a One Health approach.

Poor management and hygiene habits contribute to disease spread, while strategies based on the concept of One Health can offer more effective control of tungiasis.
