Assessment of Plasma-Endogenous Opioid Neuropeptide Levels and Psychometric Properties of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents

Nursu Cakin Memik et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the role of the endogenous opioid system-emotion regulation circuitry in NSSI by measuring plasma beta-endorphin (beta-EP), met-enkephalin (MENK) levels, and determining the psychometric features of Turkish adolescent subjects. The findings supported the important role of beta-EP in NSSI behavior and suggested that decreased plasma beta-EP levels could be a reliable indicator for NSSI.

Summary: This article reviews the current status of research on the relationship between attachment and trauma in developmental psychopathology. It begins by examining the major issues and current thinking in attachment research regarding the impact of trauma and the transmission of trauma across generations. The article then discusses recent neurobiological studies on mentalizing and trauma, and highlights the implications for clinical practice and future development.

Associations between DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder Criterion E2 endorsement and selected self-destructive behaviors in recent-era veterans: A focus on disordered eating

Rachel L. Zelkowitz et al.

Summary: The study examined the association between the engagement in specific direct and indirect self-harm behaviors and the symptom of engagement in reckless and self-destructive behaviors (Criterion E2) in PTSD. The results showed small but significant associations between E2 score and direct self-harm behaviors, substance use, purging, and binge eating. The findings suggest the need for comprehensive screening for self-destructive behaviors, including disordered eating, among veteran men and women who endorse Criterion E2.

Simulating homeostatic, allostatic and goal-directed forms of interoceptive control using active inference

Alexander Tschantz et al.

Summary: This article uses the framework of active inference to simulate and study interoceptive control and its dysfunctions. Interoceptive control aims to minimize the discrepancy between expected and actual interoceptive sensations through different forms of control. The analysis of generative models within active inference provides predictions for physiological and brain signals, supporting empirical research.

Augmented pain inhibition and higher integration of pain modulatory brain networks in women with self-injury behavior

Maria Lalouni et al.

Summary: Individuals who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) have demonstrated decreased sensitivity to pain compared to individuals without NSSI. This study aimed to identify the neurological mechanisms behind this difference. The researchers found that NSSI participants showed more effective central down-regulation of pain and stronger connections between nociceptive and pain modulatory brain regions compared to controls. These findings suggest that NSSI may represent a pain-insensitive endophenotype associated with a greater risk for self-injurious behavior.

Global prevalence and characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury between 2010 and 2021 among a non-clinical sample of adolescents: A meta-analysis

Qingqing Xiao et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found a high prevalence of NSSI in nonclinical sample of adolescents, but there are some changes in severity, methods, and reasons. Based on the current evidence, adolescents in modern society are more inclined to implement NSSI behavior by a variety of ways, which usually are repetitive, and moderate and severe injuries are gradually increasing. It is also worth noting that adolescents with siblings or in single-parent families are relatively more likely to implement NSSI behavior due to maladjustment to the new family model.

Influences of Caregiving on Development: A Sensitive Period for Biological Embedding of Predictability and Safety Cues

Dylan G. Gee et al.

Summary: Caregivers play a significant role in the neural and behavioral development of offspring, with early caregiving experiences influencing corticolimbic circuitry and emotion regulation. During a sensitive period, predictable and safe caregiver inputs can prime the brain to be receptive to later caregiver influences, while adversity may accelerate children's brain maturation and shorten the period of plasticity and caregiver influence.

Functions of Interoception: From Energy Regulation to Experience of the Self

Karen S. Quigley et al.

Summary: Interoceptive processing refers to how the nervous system anticipates, senses, and integrates signals originating from the body. Key functions of interoception include energy regulation, memory, affective experience, and the psychological sense of self. Multimodal integration occurs between interoceptive and exteroceptive modalities, and further empirical work is needed to understand where and how this integration happens.

Summary: Interoception, the sense of internal bodily state, is crucial for physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being. Understanding how physical activity influences interoceptive processes could have important implications for mental health and overall well-being.

The development of narrative identity and the emergence of personality disorders in adolescence

Rebecca L. Shiner et al.

Summary: Narrative identity plays a significant role in the development of personality disorder in adolescents, as their life stories reflect individual differences and ways of constructing meaning. Research suggests that individuals with PD tend to narrate their lives more negatively, and adolescents' narrative identities may impact the consolidation or recovery from PD during the transition to adulthood.

Summary: The idea that our perceptions are influenced by prior events and experiences has received support from Predictive Processing (PP) and Active Inference framework. Self-harm in the context of borderline personality disorder

Corinna Reichl et al.

Summary: This article provides a selective overview of recent studies on the relationship between nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The findings suggest that NSSI, particularly, can serve as an accessible marker for early detection of BPD risk. Additionally, the review highlights the role of affective instability in maintaining NSSI and increasing the risk of suicidal behavior among individuals with BPD, as well as the effectiveness of treatment programs in reducing self-harming behavior.
