Dreissena in the Great Lakes: what have we learned in 30 years of invasion

Alexander Y. Karatayev et al.

Summary: Research on zebra and quagga mussels in the Laurentian Great Lakes, along with data from European and North American inland lakes, reveals the impact of lake morphometry on the invasion dynamics, growth, and reproduction of these molluscs. The carrying capacity of mussels is exceeded at depths less than 30m, resulting in population decline within 13-15 years. At depths of 30-90m, the increase in mussel densities is slower and the decline is less significant, while populations continue to increase even after 30 years of invasion at depths greater than 90m. The proliferation of quagga mussels leads to a substantial increase in benthic wet biomass and causes a decrease in phosphorous, chlorophyll, phytoplankton, and zooplankton biomass. The decline in the abundance of commercially important fishes can be attributed to the competition with mussels, but the introduction of round goby has facilitated a connection between dreissenids and economically valuable fish species, enhancing productivity.

Long-term dynamics of Lake Erie benthos: One lake, three distinct communities

Alexander Y. Karatayev et al.

Summary: Lake Erie has undergone various anthropogenic-driven changes in the past century, impacting the benthic community composition. The study reveals that eutrophication, water quality improvement, and the introduction of dreissenid species are the major drivers of benthic changes in different areas of Lake Erie.

The behaviors of two limnetic river plumes discharging into the semi-enclosed western basin of Lake Erie during ice-free seasons

Qianru Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of sediment plumes from the Detroit and Maumee Rivers in the western basin of Lake Erie, revealing that their dispersion is influenced by coastlines and wind directions. The Maumee River plume travels downstream under north and west winds, and upstream under south and east winds. The Detroit River plume moves upstream under west winds, downstream under north and east winds, and is confined at its river mouth under south winds. The sizes of the plumes vary with wind forcing, river flux, and show significant seasonality.
