Migratory behaviour is positively associated with genetic diversity in butterflies

Aurora Garcia-Berro et al.

Summary: This study investigates the heterozygosity and population size dynamics of migratory insects using genomic data. The findings show that migratory species have higher levels of genome-wide heterozygosity than nonmigratory species. The study also reveals that migratory Lepidoptera maintain overall genetic diversity and demographic stability despite the risks associated with migration and local environmental fluctuations.

Late-Quaternary megafauna extinctions have strongly reduced mammalian vegetation consumption

Rasmus Ostergaard Pedersen et al.

Summary: If human-linked extinctions and extirpations had not occurred, the effects of herbivorous mammals in natural ecosystems would have been much stronger. Our study estimates that wild mammals currently consume a median of 11% of net primary productivity (NPP) in natural areas, which would have been 21% without extinctions and extirpations. These findings highlight the significant impact of species losses on ecosystem structure and functioning.

Evolution of the germline mutation rate across vertebrates

Lucie A. Bergeron et al.

Summary: We sequenced and compared high-coverage genomes of 151 parent-offspring trios from 68 species of vertebrates and found that the per-generation mutation rate varies greatly among species, with males having higher rates than females in mammals and birds. We identified generation time, age at maturity, and species-level fecundity as key factors influencing this variation. Species with larger long-term effective population sizes tend to have lower mutation rates, supporting the drift barrier hypothesis. Domesticated animals with shorter generation times display exceptionally high yearly mutation rates, emphasizing the importance of generation time in mutation rate evolution.

pastclim 1.2: an R package to easily access and use paleoclimatic reconstructions

Michela Leonardi et al.

Summary: The recent development of continuous paleoclimatic reconstructions has opened up opportunities for interdisciplinary studies in various fields. However, accessing and analyzing (paleo)climatic data can be difficult for scholars unfamiliar with specific file formats. In this study, we introduce pastclim, an R package that facilitates the access and use of paleoclimatic reconstructions. The package includes datasets covering different time periods and provides instructions on how to include additional datasets, offering a convenient platform for incorporating past climate data into analyses and pipelines.

Exploring a natural baseline for large-herbivore biomass in ecological restoration

Camilla Flojgaard et al.

Summary: Large herbivores play a crucial role in ecosystem processes, but have experienced significant historical losses and are facing pressures in current ecosystems. Research indicates that African ecosystems generally have higher large-herbivore biomass and stronger consumer-producer relationships, while ecosystems outside Africa have lower-than-expected large-herbivore biomass. Management and rewilding of large herbivores without predefined density targets are recommended to restore natural grazing processes.

The effects of defaunation on plants' capacity to track climate change

Evan C. Fricke et al.

Summary: Half of all plant species rely on animals for seed dispersal. Defaunation and novel community assembly affect plant adaptation to climate change through migration. Predicting pairwise interactions and dispersal function for fleshy-fruited plants globally can help forecast their assembly and functioning. Mammal and bird defaunation has already reduced the capacity of plants to track climate change by 60% globally, showing a synergy between defaunation and climate change that undermines vegetation resilience.

Late date of human arrival to North America: Continental scale differences in stratigraphic integrity of pre-13,000 BP archaeological sites

Todd A. Surovell et al.

Summary: By analyzing the stratigraphic integrity of early North American sites, it is suggested that early Beringian sites show good integrity while clear signs of minimally disturbed archaeological components in the south of the ice sheets only appear during the Clovis period, indicating a relatively late date of human arrival to the Americas.

Collapse of terrestrial mammal food webs since the Late Pleistocene

Evan C. Fricke et al.

Summary: Food webs play a crucial role in influencing ecosystem diversity and functioning. This study utilized extinct and extant mammal traits, geographic ranges, observed predator-prey interactions, and deep learning models to investigate the changes in terrestrial mammal food webs over the past 130,000 years globally. The results revealed significant declines in complexity of food webs due to loss of food web links after the arrival and expansion of human populations. The study estimates a 53% decline in food web links globally, primarily caused by extinctions but also by range losses for extant species. This highlights the potential for restoring food webs through recovery of extant species.

Late Quaternary extinctions in the Indian Subcontinent

A. M. Jukar et al.

Summary: Research shows that a low magnitude extinction event of large mammals occurred in the Indian Subcontinent approximately 30,000 years after the arrival of Homo sapiens. The co-evolution hypothesis between humans and animals, as well as robust population networks and climatic refugia, are suggested to have played a significant role in the survival of megafauna in this region.

High genetic diversity and low differentiation reflect the ecological versatility of the African leopard

Patricia Pecnerova et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the genomic diversity of African leopards is higher than that of other large cats, likely due to their exceptionally high effective population size maintained throughout the Pleistocene. Compared to other large cats, African leopards exhibit ongoing gene flow and very low population differentiation within their population.

Origins of modern human ancestry

Anders Bergstrom et al.

Summary: New findings in palaeoanthropological and genomic records have reshaped our understanding of the origins of modern human ancestry. The article outlines three key phases in the evolution of modern human ancestry, from the global expansion of modern humans to their interactions with Neanderthals and Denisovans, the African origin of modern human diversity, and the complex separation of modern human ancestors from archaic human groups. It argues that there is no single point in time when modern human ancestry was limited to a specific birthplace, and that the appearances of defining traits of Homo sapiens align with a variety of evolutionary histories.

Summary: Various methods based on SMC have been developed to infer population demographic history using full genome sequence data, but a comprehensive investigation into the limitations of these methods is lacking. Researchers have introduced a tool to infer the best case convergence of SMC methods and evaluated the inference accuracy when assumptions are violated. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of the transition matrix in SMC methods.

Historical effective population size of North American hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) and challenges to estimating trends in contemporary effective breeding population size from archived samples

Robert S. Cornman et al.

Summary: By estimating genetic effective population size (Ne), the study found that the population size of hoary bats at least doubled in the last 100,000 years, possibly exceeding 10,000 in the Holocene. The two cohorts were comparable in genetic characteristics, but there were some outlier samples that needed to be excluded, leading to an unstable comparison between the two cohorts.

Whole genome sequencing reveals a complex introgression history and the basis of adaptation to subarctic climate in wild sheep

Maulik Upadhyay et al.

Summary: Snow sheep, adapted to cold and alpine habitats, play a crucial role in their ecosystem and show potential for adaptation to climate change. Genomic analysis revealed low heterozygosity possibly due to isolation and bottlenecks, with introgression involving other wild sheep species indicating past genetic interactions. Adaptive introgression was found to target genes related to immunity, adipogenesis, and morphology, with selection on genes for mitochondrial function and thermogenesis underlying cold adaptation in snow sheep.
