In this study, the combination of redox-active organic molecule (pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone) with graphene-based materials resulted in a high capacity electrode. The assembled ASC using PYT-functionalized graphene as cathode and annealed-Ti3C2Tx MXene as anode achieved an outstanding energy density of 18.4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 700 W kg(-1). PYT-functionalized graphene shows great potential for high-performance energy storage devices.

Designing a solubility-limited small organic molecule for aqueous zinc-organic batteries

Summary: To address the issue of organic cathode dissolution in aqueous zinc-organic batteries (AZOBs), a solubility-limited dibenzo[a,c]dibenzo[5,6:7,8]quinoxalino[2,3-i]phenazine-10,21-dione (TABQ-PQ) molecule was successfully designed and synthesized. The extended pi-conjugated plane improved the p conjugation effect of TABQ-PQ and enhanced its pi-pi stacked interaction, leading to low solubility and good structural stability. The TABQ-PQ cathode exhibited an H+-coordination charge-storage mechanism, high capacitance-controlling behavior, and demonstrated a superlong cycling life of over 30,000 cycles and a high discharge capacity of 140.7 mAh g(-1) at 20 A g(-1). This work provides insights into the design of solubility-limited organic electrodes for high-performance AZOBs.

A novel COF/MXene film electrode with fast redox kinetics for high-performance flexible supercapacitor

Summary: A flexible carbonyl containing COF/MXene composite film electrode (CMFs) was prepared using a cation-driven self-assembly process. The composite electrode exhibited enhanced electron transfer and ion migration rates due to the synergistic effect between the ordered one-dimensional pore structure of COFs and the excellent conductivity of MXene. Assembled into an all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor, the CMFs//CCMP asymmetric supercapacitors (ASC) demonstrated high energy density, power density, and capacitance retention, indicating great potential for future flexible and wearable devices.

2,6-diaminoanthraquinone anchored on functionalized biomass porous carbon boosts electrochemical stability for metal-free redox supercapacitor electrode

Summary: In this study, redox-active molecule 2,6-diaminoanthraqui-none (DAQ) was anchored on amino functionalized biomass porous carbon (FWS) via strong hydrogen bonding interaction to improve the electrochemical stability. The optimized DAQ@FWS composite exhibited excellent specific capacitance (424.9 F g-1 at 1 A g-1) and stable capacity retention (93.1% after 10,000 cycles). Moreover, the DAQ@FWS composite maintained a high capacitance (300.4 F g-1) even at 30 A g-1. Therefore, amino functionalization of biomass porous carbon as an effective strategy to anchor redox active organic quinones can be promising for fabricating superior performance supercapacitor electrode material.

3D Binder-free conjugated microporous polymer carbon Aerogels@MnO2 cathode for High-Performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Summary: In this study, conjugated microporous polymer aerogels (CMPAs) were prepared through Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction, and high conductivity carbon-based aerogels (C-CMPAs) were obtained by pyrolysis. MnO2 nanosheet arrays were grown on the surface of C-CMPAs nanotubes (C-CMPAs@MnO2) through a low temperature hydrothermal method, forming a thin-walled cell configuration. The unique anisotropic structure greatly increased the contact area of electrode/electrolyte interfaces and provided abundant electrochemically active sites, while also shortening the Zn2+ ion insertion/extraction paths. The core/shell structure between C-CMPAs and MnO2 exhibited high mechanical strength and long-term cycling life.

Graphene non-covalently functionalized with Gallic acid (Ga) as high performance electrode material for supercapacitors

Summary: Organic small molecules have great potential as green, low-cost, and renewable materials in energy storage devices. However, their poor electrical conductivity limits their use as electrode materials. The combination of organic molecules and conductive carbon materials is an effective method to enhance their electrical conductivity. In this study, Gallic acid functionalized graphene hydrogel composite (Ga/GH) was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method. The Ga/GH composite showed excellent electrochemical capacitance performance due to the incorporation of Faradaic pseudocapacitance and double-layer capacitance. The specific capacitance reached up to 483 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1).

Scalable combustion synthesis of graphene-welded activated carbon for high-performance supercapacitors
