Chemical fingerprinting of organic micropollutants in different industrial treated wastewater effluents and their effluent-receiving river

Mingyuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study established a simple and effective chemical fingerprinting method to examine the source-sink relationships between industrial wastewater and rivers. By screening chemicals and conducting chemical fingerprinting analysis, characteristic pollutants of different industrial enterprises were identified. The results showed that aromatic compounds were the most prevalent pollutant category in industrial wastewater.

The occurrence of tire wear compounds and their transformation products in municipal wastewater and drinking water treatment plants

Cassandra Johannessen et al.

Summary: In this study, the presence of 29 chemicals derived from tire wear in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment plants was monitored. The results showed that these compounds had different concentrations and quantities in influents and effluents, indicating that both types of treatment plants may serve as sinks and sources of these substances.

Combined Effects of Sulfamethoxazole and Erythromycin on a Freshwater Microalga, Raphidocelis subcapitata: Toxicity and Oxidative Stress

Yibo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental effects of two emerging contaminants, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and erythromycin (ERY), and their mixture on a green microalga R. subcapitata. The results showed that high concentrations of antibiotics affected the algal growth by decreasing chlorophyll content and disrupting the antioxidant system. Different antibiotics had different effects on the antioxidant mechanisms in the alga, suggesting a complex oxidative stress process.

Correction of Matrix Effects for Reliable Non-target Screening LC-ESI-MS Analysis of Wastewater

Selina Tisler et al.

Summary: Matrix effects pose challenges for accurate measurements with LC ESI-MS. This study developed a three-step method to evaluate and compensate for matrix effects in enriched wastewater extracts. The method involved determining the optimal relative enrichment factor, correcting matrix effects at higher REFs, and predicting and correcting residual structure-specific matrix effects.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern identified by suspect screening from urban wastewater treatment plant effluents at a territorial scale

Antoine Gosset et al.

Summary: This study conducted a territorial-scale ERA on CECs detected in the effluents of 10 WWTPs in a highly urbanized territory using LC-QToF-MS, focusing on pharmaceutical residue and pesticides. The results identified high risks for several CECs individually, with additional significant risks found in mixtures of CECs. The study highlighted the importance of assessing not only individual CECs but also their combined effects on ecotoxicological risks in urban streams.

Occurrence and removal of emerging pollutants in urban sewage treatment plants using LC-QToF-MS suspect screening and quantification

Laure Wiest et al.

Summary: Urban wastewaters are found to be major vectors of emerging pollutants to aquatic ecosystems, with pharmaceutical residues and pesticides being the main contaminants. The study identified 41 emerging pollutants, with low removal rates observed for more than 50% of the compounds, posing potential ecotoxicological risks to exposed ecosystems.
