Effect of ferrous-activated calcium peroxide oxidation on forward osmosis treatment of algae-laden water: Membrane fouling mitigation and mechanism

Chengsi Hou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy of using ferrous-activated calcium peroxide (Fe(II)/CaO2) to control fouling in forward osmosis (FO) membrane during algae-laden water treatment. The Fe(II)/CaO2 treatment promotes the aggregation of algal contaminants, maintains cell viability and integrity, and efficiently removes organic contaminants. It also reduces fouling by decreasing the adhesion between contaminants and the FO membrane surface. The co-coagulation of in-situ Fe(III) and Ca(OH)2, as well as the oxidation of center dot OH, are the main mechanisms for fouling mitigation. Overall, the Fe(II)/CaO2 process effectively improves the efficiency of FO for algae-laden water treatment and has promising application prospects.

Improvements of ferrate(VI) pretreatment on membrane flux and membrane rejection using cheap NaClO reagent

Haiyang He et al.

Summary: This study discovered that the cheap NaClO reagent can improve the performance of ferrate(VI) pretreatment, establishing the Fe(VI)/NaClO (FC) process. The optimization of 20 μM Fe(VI)/4 μM NaClO [FC (5:1)] increased J/J0 to 0.491 at the end of cycle 1 filtration. Additionally, FC (5:1) reduced reversible and irreversible membrane fouling resistance by 50% and 56% respectively. The rejection ratio of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) increased from 27.18% in Fe(VI) group to 40.34% in FC (5:1). Rating: 8.

Integrated ferrate and calcium sulfite to treat algae-laden water for controlling ultrafiltration membrane fouling: High-efficiency oxidation and simultaneous cell integrity maintaining

Xiaoxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: To alleviate severe algal-source membrane fouling in the UF process, a combination of calcium sulfite (CaSO3) and ferrate (Fe(VI)) pre-treatment was proposed. The integrated pre-treatment improved the removal rate of algae cells and generated larger flocs with better settleability. The oxidation capacity was strengthened during the Fe(VI)/CaSO3 process, leading to enhanced fouling alleviation and in-situ coagulation efficiency.

Mutual activation between ferrate and calcium sulfite for surface water pre-treatment and ultrafiltration membrane fouling control

Jinchuan Lian et al.

Summary: In this study, ferrate (Fe(VI)) and calcium sulfite (CaSO3) were combined to improve ultrafiltration (UF) performance in surface water treatment. The combination of Fe(VI) and CaSO3 generated various active species, effectively eliminating fluorescent components. Dissolved organic carbon and UV254 were significantly reduced with Fe(VI)/CaSO3 = 0.05/0.15 mM. After UF, the removal rate for these parameters were further improved. The UF stage also resulted in reduced fouling and improved membrane performance.

Summary: This study investigates the inhibitory effect of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal from wastewater. It is found that DBP has a stronger inhibition on the removal of tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like DOM fractions. Additionally, the concentration of DBP also affects the metabolic pathways of microorganisms in degrading DOM in anoxic units.

PPCP degradation by ammonia/chlorine: Efficiency, radical species, and byproducts formation

Bei Ye et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation of eight structurally diverse pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) by ammonia/chlorine. Compared with chlorination, ammonia/chlorine significantly enhanced PPCP degradation, with degradation efficiencies of most PPCPs greater than 70%. In neutral conditions, PPCP degradation was mainly attributed to ·OH, with its contribution ranging from 74% to 100% at a Cl-2/N molar ratio of 1.6. Furthermore, fewer volatile halogenated byproducts were formed in reclaimed water when using the ammonia/chlorine process, with concentrations of each byproduct formed by ammonia/chlorine less than 10 μg/L. This study suggests the feasibility of using ammonia/chlorine oxidation to degrade PPCPs in reclaimed water.

Enhanced hydroxyl radical generation for micropollutant degradation in the In2O3/Vis-LED process through the addition of periodate

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: Periodate (PI) was introduced into the In2O3/Vis-LED process to enhance the formation of center dot OH and promote the degradation of organic foulants. Results showed that PI significantly increased the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in the process. Electrochemical analyses demonstrated that PI effectively inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, leading to the production of center dot OH.

Efficient removal of p-arsanilic acid and arsenite by Fe(II)/peracetic acid (Fe(II)/PAA) and PAA processes

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the efficiency and mechanism of Fe(II)/PAA and PAA processes in oxidizing p-ASA and As(III). Fe(II)/PAA process rapidly degrades p-ASA to the toxic As(V) at neutral to acidic pHs, while PAA process is effective in oxidizing As(III). The generation of hydroxyl radicals and organic radicals from PAA contributes to the degradation of p-ASA, and PAA shows potential for the oxidation of As(III).

Insight into wavelength-dependent UVA-LED/chlorine process for micropollutant degradation: Performance, mechanism, and effects of water matrix

Ge Zeng et al.

Summary: UVA-LED-activated chlorine effectively degrades micropollutants, with O3, & BULL;OH, and RCS as the main reactive species. The quantum yield of chlorine at the UVA wavelength band positively correlates with the degradation rate of atenolol (ATL). Higher light intensity enhances chlorine photolysis and ATL degradation. The contributions of & BULL;OH, O3, and RCS to ATL degradation vary with pH, while Cl- has no significant influence due to the synergistic effect of different reactive species. The primary transformation pathway of ATL involves hydroxylation, chlorination, and bond-cleavage pathways.
