Trajectories of defending behaviors: Longitudinal association with normative and social adjustment and self-perceived popularity

Ana Bravo et al.

Summary: This study used a longitudinal design to identify four defending trajectories and compare the differences between them. The results showed that adolescents in the stable-high defending group had the highest levels of normative and social adjustment, as well as self-perceived popularity. Adolescents in the decrease defending group experienced a decrease in normative adjustment over time, while those in the increase defending group saw an increase in social adjustment and self-perceived popularity. Adolescents in the stable-low defending group had consistently low levels of normative and social adjustment, as well as self-perceived popularity.

Adolescent Popularity as a Nonlinear, Two-Dimensional Construct: Convergent Results From Three Large Samples

Peter E. L. Marks et al.

Summary: The study found a strong relationship between popularity and unpopularity among adolescents, but it is not linear; further analysis showed that treating popularity as a curvilinear term or including popularity and unpopularity as separate terms can significantly explain more variance in social and behavioral correlates.

Disentangling dyadic and reputational perceptions of prosociality, aggression, and popularity in explaining friendship networks in early adolescence

Diego Palacios et al.

Summary: This study found that adolescents are more likely to befriend classmates perceived widely as prosocial and less likely to befriend those perceived as aggressive. The influence of dyadic perception on popularity disappears when reputational perception is included. The study highlights the differences between dyadic and reputational perceptions of peer behavior, showing that both play a role in befriending peers.

Friendship selection and influence processes for popularity in early and mid-adolescents

Ana Bravo et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of popularity levels on friendship selection and friends' influence on popularity levels in early and mid-adolescence. The results showed that adolescents prefer to be friends with peers who have similar levels of popularity and are attracted to those who are highly popular. Additionally, adolescents with popular friends tend to become more popular over time. These findings highlight the significance of popularity levels in adolescents' friendship choices and suggest that popularity plays a relevant role in social development.

Toward understanding the functions of peer influence: A summary and synthesis of recent empirical research

Brett Laursen et al.

Summary: Compelling evidence shows that peer influence greatly impacts adolescent attitudes and behaviors, shaping both adaptive and maladaptive outcomes. The Influence-Compatibility Model integrates the idea of increased conformity in early adolescence with evidence of peer influence increasing affiliate similarity, ultimately facilitating the establishment of friendships, group integration, and reducing differences that may lead to social exclusion.
