The complex associations between scientific reasoning and advanced theory of mind

Christopher Osterhaus et al.

Summary: This 6-wave longitudinal study conducted from 2014 to 2018 in Germany found that scientific reasoning abilities start developing at the age of 6 and remain highly stable. Individual differences in language abilities, mindreading skills, and parental education were related to the development of scientific reasoning. The study suggests that mindreading skills are a precursor to the development of scientific reasoning, and older children use scientific reasoning to revise their advanced theories of mind.

Evaluating SEM Model Fit with Small Degrees of Freedom

Dexin Shi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the performance of root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) is suboptimal for assessing structural equation models with small degrees of freedom (df). This study compares the performance of standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) and comparative fit index (CFI) in small df models with different factor loadings, sample sizes, and model misspecifications. The results indicate that in comparison to RMSEA, SRMR and CFI are less influenced by df and can provide more useful information in differentiating models with varying degrees of misfit. Researchers are advised to exercise caution when interpreting RMSEA for models with small df and rely more on SRMR and CFI.

School engagement, sensitivity to criticism and academic achievement in children: The predictive role of theory of mind

Joanna Smogorzewska et al.

Summary: The present study examined the relationships among children's theory of mind, sensitivity to criticism, school engagement, and academic achievement. The results showed that understanding of faux pas predicted the children's motivation for improvement and language and mathematics scores. In turn, motivation predicted school engagement, and engagement predicted language and mathematics scores, even when initial achievement was controlled. A hypothesized sequential mediation was established among theory of mind, motivation, engagement, and academic achievement. The study highlights the importance of theory of mind development for children's academic achievement and overall functioning in school.

Looking for the lighthouse: A systematic review of advanced theory-of-mind tests beyond preschool

Christopher Osterhaus et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic review of the literature on Advanced Theory of Mind (AToM) in the past ten years. The study reveals the conceptual challenges in testing AToM and identifies the most frequently-used measures across age groups and for studying antecedents and consequences of AToM. Meta-analytic findings show the relationship between AToM and language skills as well as inhibition, but not empathy. The review provides valuable insights for researchers in task selection.

A longitudinal reciprocal relation between theory of mind and language

Carrey Tik-Sze Siu et al.

Summary: This study tested 97 Cantonese-speaking 4-year-olds over a 6-month period and found that early language ability predicted later performance on ToM tasks, while early change-of-location was related to verb discrimination. The results suggest a reciprocal relationship between language and ToM development.

Exploring the mutually reinforcing relationship between theory of mind and reading in adult readers

Sophie Jackson

Summary: The research indicates that theory of mind is significantly related to reading comprehension and print-exposure in adults. However, the relationship between print-exposure and reading comprehension is not mediated by theory of mind. This suggests that reading and theory of mind may have a parallel mutually reinforcing relationship in adulthood.

Summary: This study aims to provide empirical benchmarks for cross-lagged effects and found that the benchmark values for cross-lagged effects in the cross-lagged panel model and the random intercept cross-lagged panel model are 0.03, 0.07, and 0.12. The effect sizes did not differ significantly between different subfields and design characteristics.

Just listen to your mind: Consequences of theory of mind development for deaf or hard-of-hearing children

Joanna Smogorzewska et al.

Summary: This longitudinal study investigated the cognitive consequences of theory of mind (ToM) in deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The results revealed that high levels of ToM ability predicted higher levels of language and literacy skills (LLS) 20 months later. Sensitivity to criticism and academic self-concept played mediating roles in the relationship between ToM and LLS.

A longitudinal study of theory of mind and listening comprehension: Is preschool theory of mind important?

Sophie Jackson et al.

Summary: Theory of mind has been shown to be important for listening comprehension in children. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between preschool theory of mind and later listening comprehension. The findings revealed that theory of mind had a direct effect on listening comprehension at the same time, but the early theory of mind did not have a direct impact on later listening comprehension. Instead, there was only an indirect effect of earlier theory of mind on later listening comprehension through concurrent theory of mind.

The Development of Advanced Theory of Mind in Middle Childhood: A Longitudinal Study From Age 5 to 10 Years

Christopher Osterhaus et al.

Summary: This 5-year longitudinal study investigated the development of advanced theory-of-mind (AToM) in German children aged 5 to 10. The study found that core aspects of AToM developed nonlinearly, reaching a milestone around age 7. Different mechanisms may underlie diverse aspects of social cognition in middle childhood.
