Eating disorder symptomatology among transgender individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sofie M. Rasmussen et al.

Summary: Research found that transgender individuals are more likely to have an eating disorder or engage in disordered eating than cisgender individuals. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the literature on eating disorders and symptomatology among transgender individuals, as well as summarize the existing literature on gender-affirming treatment and prevalence. The results revealed higher levels of eating disorder symptomatology among transgender individuals, especially cisgender men, and gender-affirming treatment seems to alleviate these symptoms.

The Effect of Gender-Affirming Hormones on Gender Dysphoria, Quality of Life, and Psychological Functioning in Transgender Individuals: A Systematic Review

Taylah R. van Leerdam et al.

Summary: This review critically assesses the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on gender dysphoria, body uneasiness, psychological well-being, and quality of life. While results vary, most studies indicate that GAHT reduces gender dysphoria, body dissatisfaction, and uneasiness, leading to improved psychological well-being and quality of life in transgender individuals. However, the current research is of low to moderate quality and does not consider external social factors unaffected by GAHT that significantly impact dysphoria, well-being, and quality of life.

This study examines bone metabolism in transgender adults before GAHT, along with its correlation to biochemical profile, body composition, and lifestyle habits.

Barriers and Motives for Physical Activity and Sports Practice among Trans People: A Systematic Review

Joana Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study analyzed research conducted between 2016 and 2021 on the barriers and motives for physical activity, physical exercise, and sports among trans individuals. Internal barriers included body dissatisfaction, discomfort, discrimination, and fear of others' reactions, while external barriers were related to the sports environment, PE environment, and sports participation policies and regulations. The desire for a specific physical form and the role of PE in gender-confirming surgery were the main motives for practicing physical activity. This study emphasizes the importance of overcoming barriers and suggests motives that can help create inclusive interventions, plans, and policies to promote physical activity among trans individuals.

Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adult Coping Disparities During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Evan A. Krueger et al.

Summary: This study examined disparities in health-related behaviors among sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed that LGBQ men and women, as well as TNB respondents, were more likely to engage in negative coping behaviors than heterosexual men. Tailored public health and clinical interventions are needed to address these disparities and reduce the adverse impact of the pandemic on SGM young adults.
