Neuropsychiatric symptoms and caregiver relationship quality for older Mexican Americans

Phillip A. Cantu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes data from older Mexican Americans and finds that neuropsychiatric symptoms have an impact on the relationship quality between caregivers and care recipients. Hyperactivity symptoms are associated with appreciation, arguing, and nerves, while psychosis symptoms are associated with arguing and nerves. Mexican American caregivers tend to negatively evaluate their relationships when the older person exhibits behavioral problems.

2023 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures

[Anonymous]

Summary: This article discusses the impact of Alzheimer's disease on public health, including its prevalence and incidence, mortality and morbidity, care usage and costs, and the effects on family caregivers, the dementia workforce, and society. It highlights the patient journey and potential treatment options for Alzheimer's disease. Currently, there are 6.7 million older Americans living with Alzheimer's dementia, a number that could increase to 13.8 million by 2060 without medical breakthroughs. Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the US, with deaths increasing by over 145% between 2000 and 2019. There is a decline in the number of caregivers and an increase in care provided by each remaining caregiver. The costs of unpaid caregiving in 2022 reached $339.5 billion, impacting caregivers' mental and physical health. Additionally, there is a shortage of healthcare workers in dementia care, and Medicare and Medicaid payments are significantly higher for individuals with dementia. The article also explores the need for sufficient physician specialists in Alzheimer's care, considering the availability of drugs that change the underlying biology of the disease.

Vocalization and physiological hyperarousal in infant-caregiver dyads where the caregiver has elevated anxiety

Celia G. Smith et al.

Summary: The study found that anxious caregivers are more likely to experience high physiological arousal when interacting with infants. They are also more likely to produce intense vocalizations during high arousal states. These intense vocalizations are associated with sustained increases in autonomic arousal for both anxious caregivers and their infants.

Prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms across dementia stages: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Dara K. Y. Leung et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms in dementia patients at different stages, finding that these emotional symptoms are highly prevalent across stages and do not change as the illness progresses. Evaluation methods and cultural differences may explain some of the variance, calling for further investigation and more cross-cultural studies.

Predictors of institutionalization in users of day care facilities with mild cognitive impairment to moderate dementia

Klara Spiegl et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of institutionalization among people with mild cognitive impairment to moderate dementia who attend day care facilities throughout Germany. The risk of institutionalization was found to be significantly increased for those with more neuropsychiatric symptoms, those not living with their caregiver, and those with lower care levels. This suggests that interventions targeting neuropsychiatric symptoms and providing support for caregivers may help delay or prevent institutionalization.

Associations between caregiver mastery and anxiety in persons living with dementia: A study of dyads living in community

Yeji Hwang et al.

Summary: Higher level of caregiver mastery was found to be associated with lower odds of anxiety presentation in persons living with dementia (PLWD). A comprehensive education program for caregivers to improve their caregiving skills and mastery is suggested to reduce anxiety in PLWD.
