Synergy of 1-MCP and hypobaric treatments prevent fermented flavour and improve consumers' acceptability of 'Shughri' pear

Ayaz Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and hypobaric treatment on the stability of Shughri pear during storage. The results showed that the combination of 25 kPa hypobaric treatment and 0.6 mu LL-1 1-MCP significantly delayed fruit ripening, reduced enzyme activities, maintained quality, and increased consumer acceptability of the pear.

Phyto-squalane: A new active ingredient to prevent superficial scald on pears

Carolina A. Torres et al.

Summary: The study found that different concentrations of phyto-squalane treatment can effectively prevent superficial scald in pears during long-term cold storage. This treatment can reduce fruit softening, de-greening, and ethylene production, and it is effective for pears from different growing areas, seasons, and maturity levels at harvest.

Timing of Ethylene Inhibition Affects Internal Browning and Quality of 'Gala' Apples in Long-Term Low Oxygen Storage

Jennifer R. DeEll et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of preharvest and postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments on internal browning and quality of 'Gala' apples during long-term low O-2 storage. The results showed that storing apples in 0.5-0.6 kPa O-2 significantly reduced internal browning, while the effect of 1-MCP in this storage condition was minimal. Preharvest 1-MCP treatment improved firmness retention and reduced internal browning. The effects of ethylene inhibition and greasiness were consistent, but there was little and inconsistent effect on soluble solids concentration and malic acid content.

Synergistic Effect of Dipping in Aloe Vera Gel and Mixing with Chitosan or Calcium Chloride on the Activities of Antioxidant Enzymes and Cold Storage Potential of Peach (Prunus persica L.) Fruits

M. S. Aboryia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic effect of coating peach fruits with Aloe vera gel (AVG) mixed with chitosan (CH) or calcium chloride (CaCl2) on their physical and chemical characteristics. The results showed that coating the fruits with 30% AVG blended with 1.5% CH significantly extended the storage period, reduced ion leakage, malondialdehyde content, and weight loss. The quality features of the fruits were also maintained, and the coating increased phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Dipping peach fruits in this mixture can effectively prolong their storage and marketing period.

Exogenous Postharvest Application of Calcium Chloride and Salicylic Acid to Maintain the Quality of Broccoli Florets

Hossam S. El-Beltagi et al.

Summary: The consumption of broccoli has become more important in recent years due to its anticarcinogenic and antioxidant compounds, as well as its vitamins. However, broccoli florets quickly deteriorate after harvest, leading to losses in nutritional and bioactive compounds. In this study, the effects of salicylic acid (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) treatments, alone or in combination, on the quality of broccoli florets stored at 5 degrees C were evaluated. The results showed that treating the samples with 2 mM SA or a combination of SA and 2% CaCl2 resulted in lower weight loss and preservation of various antioxidant compounds.

Effect of Storage Conditions on Storability and Antioxidant Potential of Pears cv. 'Conference'

Grzegorz P. Lysiak et al.

Summary: The study found that storage conditions have a significant impact on the quality parameters of 'Conference' pears, particularly in terms of mass loss and the incidence of postharvest diseases and disorders. Storing 'Conference' pears for 180 days in normal atmosphere is not economically viable, while storing them in a controlled atmosphere is profitable, regardless of the 1-MCP treatment.

Understanding the key preharvest factors determining 'Packham's Triumph' pear heterogeneity and impact in superficial scald development and control

Carolina A. Torres et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the influence of initial fruit's maturity heterogeneity on the development of superficial scald disorder on pears. Different treatments and storage scenarios were evaluated over three seasons, showing that initial fruit heterogeneity at harvest is an important factor modulating SS development. Climatic and fruit maturity indexes were found to be unreliable for predicting SS development over multiple years, while 1-MCP and DPA treatments were effective in controlling SS independently of initial fruit heterogeneity.

Impact of edible coating derived from a combination of Aloe vera gel, chitosan and calcium chloride on maintain the quality of mango fruit at ambient temperature

Rabeh Hajebi Seyed et al.

Summary: The study showed that Aloe vera-chitosan coating significantly reduces weight loss and ascorbic acid degradation in mangoes during storage, while inhibiting polyphenol oxidase activity and delaying fruit discoloration. It is a suitable method for maintaining the quality of mango fruit at ambient temperature.
