Proliferation and differentiation study of melatonin functionalized polycaprolactone/gelatin electrospun fibrous scaffolds for nerve tissue engineering

Tingkuo Chen et al.

Summary: This study fabricated Polycaprolactone/Gelatin (PG) fibrous electrospun scaffolds functionalized with different concentrations of melatonin (MLT). The effects of MLT on the proliferation and differentiation of PC12 cells were evaluated. The results showed that an appropriate amount of MLT promoted PC12 cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as neurite germination. This study provides valuable insights for further research on MLT functionalized composite scaffolds.

Solution blow spinning of multilayer polycaprolactone/curcumin-loaded gelatin/polycaprolactone nanofilm for slow release and bacterial inhibition

Zihan Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, a multilayer nanofilm with polycaprolactone as the outer layers and curcumin-loaded gelatin film as the inner layer was fabricated using sequential solution blow spinning (SBS). The multilayer film demonstrated good slow-release ability and antibacterial activity, and also improved the thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties of the film.

Intestinal stents: Structure, functionalization and advanced engineering innovation

Yusheng Feng et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the incidence, clinical manifestations, and limitations in the treatment of intestinal cancers, focusing on the use of intestinal stents as a palliative treatment option for cancer-induced intestinal obstructions. The paper discusses material property requirements, indications, complications, and future development of stent-assisted therapy. It also reviews the advantages and disadvantages of different materials and processing techniques for intestinal stents, as well as new stent treatment combinations for colorectal cancer. The challenges in this field require further cooperative studies for future development.

Preparation and characterization of silk fibroin-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films for food packaging materials

G. Rajesha Shetty et al.

Summary: This research work characterizes blend films made by mixing silk fibroin (SF) and Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA), and demonstrates their potential use in the food-packaging industry. The blend films show improved physical and thermal properties compared to pure silk fibroin films, and exhibit good miscibility between SF and PVA molecules. They have the potential to serve as flexible and thermally stable materials for food packaging.

Development and In Vitro Evaluation of 5-Fluorouracil-Eluting Stents for the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer and Cancer-Related Obstruction

Mohammad Arafat et al.

Summary: Self-expanding metal stents are the gold standard for managing malignant gastrointestinal stenosis and obstructions, but in-stent restenosis caused by tumor growth is a significant challenge. Incorporating chemotherapeutic drugs into these stents can provide localized and sustained release of drugs to prevent tumor growth, showing promise in the treatment of GI obstructions and restenosis.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
