Is there a gender dimension of the environmental Kuznets curve? Evidence from Asian countries

Faik Bilgili et al.

Summary: This study is the first attempt to incorporate gender in environmental modeling, analyzing the impact of economic development on the environment in 36 Asian countries. The findings suggest that gender-differentiated employment and male/female labor market participation have distinct implications for environmental quality, especially in the agricultural sectors. It also reveals a negative relationship between increased schooling ratio (gender parity index) and environmental degradation.

Effect of wind and solar energy production, and economic development on the environmental quality: Is this the solution to climate change?

Bilal Hussain et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to assess the impact of wind and solar energy production and economic development on environmental quality in 43 countries from 1990 to 2017. The study uses annual data for real GDP, real trade, energy intensity, urbanization, foreign direct investment, ecological footprints, and wind and solar energy production. The analysis employs common correlated mean group (CCE-MG), cross-section-distributed lag (CS-DL), and cross-section autoregressive-distributed lag (CS-ARDL) approaches. The results indicate that real GDP has a significantly positive effect on ecological footprint, while wind and solar energy have a significantly negative impact. It is suggested that wind and solar energy resources may become more prominent for electricity purposes despite increasing investments, as their current share is limited and dominated by non-renewable energy resources.

The impact of board gender diversity on banks' environmental policy: The moderating role of gender inequality in national culture

Francesco Gangi et al.

Summary: This study addresses the need for empirical investigations into the relationship between board gender diversity (BGD) and corporate environmental responsibility (CER) in the banking industry. The results show that national gender inequality negatively moderates the positive influence of BGD on the CER engagement of banks. The study also finds that BGD affects different subdimensions of CER in varying ways.

Assessing Energy Performance Certificates for Buildings: A Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of Portuguese Municipalities

Matheus Koengkan et al.

Summary: This article presents causal recipes leading to high and low energy consumption efficiency performances using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The study found that several causal conditions are sufficient for high energy efficiency performance, including several fiscal and financial incentive policies, a highly educated population, many completed dwellings, and low GDP. On the other hand, a low education level, Gini coefficient, few completed dwellings and reconstructions, coupled with a low number of fiscal and financial policies, are the causal conditions leading to low energy consumption efficiency performance. The study's results suggest that policymakers and stakeholders should consider a combination of several causal conditions when implementing energy efficiency policies.

Globalization-induced social changes and their environmental impacts: Assessing the role of information and communication technology in sub-Saharan Africa

Chinazaekpere Nwani et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the growing transformation in social globalization on carbon emissions in sub-Saharan Africa and finds a neutral effect. It suggests that sub-Saharan African countries need to expand access to cross-border information and ensure press freedom to induce social behavioral change, particularly with a focus on environmental protection.

Ecological footprint in a global perspective: the role of domestic investment, FDI, democracy and institutional quality

Ongo Nkoa Bruno Emmanuel et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of foreign capital, domestic capital formation, institutional quality, and democracy on ecological footprint in a global panel of 101 countries from 1995 to 2017. The findings indicate that domestic capital formation increases ecological footprint, while institutional quality enhances environmental quality. Foreign capital inflow has a short-term improvement and long-term degradation effect on the environment, and democratic activities have both short-term degradation and long-term enhancement effects. Green investment policies, attention to both domestic and foreign capital, promotion of democratic practices, and strengthening of institutional framework are recommended.

Assessing influential factors for ecological footprints: A complex solution approach

Emad Kazemzadeh et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ecological footprint in a panel of 103 countries in 2018. The NCA and fsQCA models were employed, analyzing various factors such as economic growth, institutional quality, urbanization, energy consumption, fragile states, and trade openness. The NCA model examines necessary conditions, while the fsQCA model explores sufficient conditions and identifies optimal combinations of variables. The findings suggest that policymakers should focus on reducing energy consumption and promoting low economic growth to achieve a sustainable environment.

Exploring necessary and sufficient conditions for carbon emission intensity: a comparative analysis

Emad Kazemzadeh et al.

Summary: This research investigates the factors influencing carbon emission intensity in 94 countries during 2018 using necessary condition analysis (NCA) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The study shows significant variations among variables related to economics, human geography, energy, and institutions. Economic complexity and fossil energy consumption are identified as necessary conditions for high-carbon emission intensity. Different causal combinations of variables are revealed for both high- and low-carbon emission intensity. To reduce carbon emission intensity, addressing economic complexity and reducing reliance on fossil energy consumption are crucial. Policymakers should focus on sustainable economic development, environmentally friendly urbanization, and transitioning to renewable energy sources. This research's originality lies in its qualitative approach, providing valuable insights into the complex interplay of variables and offering multiple causal configurations for both high- and low-carbon emission intensity.

Enhancing environmental quality in Portugal: can CO2 intensity of GDP and renewable energy consumption be the solution?

Dervis Kirikkaleli et al.

Summary: Despite Portugal's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the country still contributes 1.6% of the EU's CO2 emissions. Limited empirical studies have been conducted on this topic in the Portuguese context. This study investigates the asymmetric and long-term impact of various factors on CO2 emissions in Portugal, using the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. The findings reveal nonlinear cointegration among the variables and demonstrate the positive and negative effects of energy consumption, economic growth, CO2 intensity of GDP, and renewable energy on CO2 emissions.

An empirical analysis of the global environmental impact of press freedom: The role of internet access and industry size in 153 countries

George N. Ike et al.

Summary: The present study aims to determine the global environmental impacts of press freedom and internet access while controlling for the role of industry. The study finds that press freedom has a positive correlation with decreased CO2 emissions, while internet access has a positive correlation with increased CO2 emissions. Additionally, the relationship between internet access and CO2 emissions follows an inverted U-shape, requiring a certain level of access penetration to achieve carbon mitigation.

Umut Uzar

Summary: This study examines the impact of freedom of the press on CO2 emissions in Emerging-7 countries and finds that it plays a significant role in reducing CO2 emissions. The research also confirms the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis, and identifies primary energy consumption and trade as important factors in increasing CO2 emissions. Policymakers are advised to expand press freedom in order to lower CO2 emissions.
