Exploring soluble and colloidally transported trace elements in stalagmites: The strontium-yttrium connection

J. T. Sliwinski et al.

Summary: Fluorescent laminations in stalagmites from Asturias, Spain are annual and coincide with peaks in yttrium and troughs in strontium concentrations, which are reliable seasonality markers. Strontium concentrations are positively correlated with stalagmite growth rate and controlled by solution supersaturation, influenced by seasonal variations in cave ventilation. Yttrium concentrations are controlled by drip water flux, surface retention time, and dilation within the matrix. The persistent anti-correlation between strontium and yttrium can be explained as an interplay between their individual controls.

The Ernesto Cave, northern Italy, as a candidate auxiliary reference section for the definition of the Anthropocene series

Andrea Borsato et al.

Summary: Annually laminated stalagmites ER77 and ER78 from Grotta di Ernesto provide an accurate annual record of environmental and anthropogenic signals for the last similar to 200 years. The stalagmites show two major transitions, one coinciding with the end of the Little Ice Age around 1840 CE, and the other occurring around 1960 CE and related to human-induced environmental changes.

Relationship of seasonal variations in drip water d13CDIC, d18O, and trace elements with surface and physical cave conditions of La Vallina cave, NW Spain

Oliver Kost et al.

Summary: Cave-monitoring studies are crucial for understanding the factors influencing cave systems and interpreting stalagmite records. This study conducted a comprehensive monitoring of cave air, bedrock chemistry, and drip water in La Vallina cave over a 16-month period. The results reveal seasonal variations in drip rates, stable isotopes, trace elements, and carbon isotope signatures, which are driven by factors such as rainfall, evapotranspiration, biological processes, and bedrock dissolution. The findings also provide insights into the seasonal ventilation and stagnation of cave air, as well as the growth patterns of stalagmites.

Effects of organic matter complexation on partitioning of transition metals into calcite: Cave-analogue crystal growth experiments

I Lindeman et al.

Summary: This study highlights the potential of using first row transition metals as proxies for climate reconstructions in speleothems. The availability of these metals in speleothems is restricted by organic complexation, which affects their concentrations and isotope ratios in calcite. Through cave-analogue experiments, it was found that the presence of organic ligands can significantly influence the partitioning of transition metals into calcite, suggesting a novel and potentially quantitative paleohydrological proxy.

Combined fluorescence imaging and LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping of stalagmites: Microfabric identification and interpretation

J. T. Sliwinski et al.

Summary: By analyzing stalagmites from Asturias, Spain using laser ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass spectrometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy, seasonal banding and variations in trace elements and fluorescence were observed. Lateral fluorescence variations in saw-tooth patterns indicate disruptions in seasonal banding, which are corroborated by trace element differences such as Mg and Na. The findings suggest that caution should be taken when obtaining trace element information without prior reconnaissance mapping. Traditional drilling may homogenize lateral variations and provide more reliable trace element estimates.

Summary: A study from the United States found that during the end of the ice age, massive iceberg discharges and meltwater pulses in the North Atlantic led to a shutdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, causing dramatic changes in East Asian and Indian monsoon rainfall.
