Nrf2 is predominantly expressed in hippocampal neurons in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

Sereen Sandouka et al.

Summary: Nrf2 activation plays a crucial role in protecting against oxidative stress-induced damage in temporal lobe epilepsy. The activation of Nrf2 is time-controlled, region-specific, and cell-type dependent. Targeted activation of the Nrf2 pathway is necessary to modify the development of epilepsy.

Antiepileptogenic effects of trilostane in the kainic acid model of temporal lobe epilepsy

Anna Maria Costa et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing the levels of the anticonvulsant neurosteroid allopregnanolone may delay the development of epileptic seizures. By using the inhibitor trilostane to increase allopregnanolone levels, researchers observed a delay in seizure onset in rats. These findings have important implications for the development of new treatment methods.

Human Microglia Synthesize Neurosteroids to Cope with Rotenone-Induced Oxidative Stress

Chiara Lucchi et al.

Summary: We found that mouse BV2 microglia synthesize neurosteroids to modify levels in response to oxidative damage caused by rotenone. In this study, we investigated whether neurosteroids could also be produced and altered by the human microglial clone 3 (HMC3) cell line in response to rotenone. The results showed an increase in IL-6 and reactive oxygen species levels after 24 hours of rotenone exposure, without affecting cell viability. However, cell viability was significantly reduced after 48 hours, accompanied by downregulation of several neurosteroids except for allopregnanolone, which was increased.
