Contrasting stock status trends obtained from survey and fishery CPUE taking Larimichthys polyactis in Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem as an example

Qingpeng Han et al.

Summary: The study used the Bayesian state-space surplus production model in JABBA to assess the small yellow croaker stock in YSLME. The results showed contrasting trends in biomass between the survey CPUE and the fishery CPUE. The assessment based on survey CPUE is recommended for establishing management reference points, while the estimates from fishery CPUE-based JABBA should be treated with caution.

Morphological and molecular analyses Protolamellodiscus senilobatus (Monogenea: Diplectanidae), a gill parasite infecting the soldier bream Argyrops filamentosus (Sparidae)

Masheil Alghamdi et al.

Summary: This study provides the first description of a diplectanid species from the gills of the soldier bream fish. The morphological and molecular analyses revealed that the parasite shares characteristics with Protolamellodiscus senilobatus, which had not been identified by DNA analysis before.

Fisheries Reference Point and Stock Status of Croaker Fishery (Sciaenidae) Exploited from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh

Partho Protim Barman et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the sustainability of the croaker fishery in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh by analyzing fisheries reference points and stock status. The results indicate that the current fishing pressure is appropriate, but specific management measures are needed to protect croaker and other fisheries in the area.

Assessing the risk of climate change to aquaculture: a national-scale case study for the Sultanate of Oman

Georg H. Engelhard et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is expanding globally and the risks that climate change poses on different culture systems in different locations are important to consider. This study presents a climate risk assessment framework for the aquaculture sector in Oman and identifies the sensitivity and exposure of different components of the sector to climate change risk. Shrimp culture and seabream cage farming are identified as high-risk due to their vulnerability to flooding, storm surges, and disease, as well as thermal sensitivity and low-oxygen levels.

Acanthopagrus oconnorae, a new species of seabream (Sparidae) from the Red Sea

Lucia Pombo-Ayora et al.

Summary: A new species of sparid fish, Acanthopagrus oconnorae, is described and differentiated from other species based on various morphological characteristics. The phylogenetic placement and species delimitation of A. oconnorae are discussed using molecular sequences. The species is hypothesized to have avoided detection due to its ecology and behavior in coastal areas with historically high fishing pressure.

Analysis of metabolites of red seabream (Pagrus major) from different geographical origins by capillary electrophoresis time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Junho Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the metabolome of red seabream muscle using capillary electrophoresis time-of-flight mass spectrometry (CE-TOF/MS) to investigate how to distinguish the origin of the fish. The results showed that there were significant differences in the metabolite profiles, specifically in amino acid levels, between South Korean and Japanese red seabream, which can be used to identify their origins.

Stock assessment and management of cephalopods: advances and challenges for short-lived fishery resources

Alexander Arkhipkin et al.

Summary: Cephalopods have unique life history characteristics that make traditional age-based modelling impractical, therefore innovative depletion models are proposed for realistic stock biomass estimates. A fast lane assessment approach is suggested for in-season stock assessments of each cohort to ensure sustainable exploitation. Most cephalopod fisheries are data-poor, so alternative assessment methods have been presented along with suggestions for further research.

Scientific Methods to Understand Fish Population Dynamics and Support Sustainable Fisheries Management

Shewit Gebremedhin et al.

Summary: Fisheries play a critical role in the livelihoods of the global population, particularly in developing countries where dependence on fisheries is high. However, unsustainable exploitation has led to a significant decline in marine fish stocks globally, while freshwater ecosystems are also under threat. Effective management strategies require timely data collection, informed decision-making, and standardized methods for assessing and conserving fish stocks.

Fish Stock Assessment for Data-Poor Fisheries, with a Case Study of Tropical Hilsa Shad (Tenualosa ilisha) in the Water of Bangladesh

Mohammed Shahidul Alam et al.

Summary: The study conducted a rigorous assessment of the Hilsa stock status in Bangladesh using three different methodological approaches, revealing that the stock is likely to be overfished due to over-exploitation. Recommendations include setting lower length and mesh size limits, as well as proposing a yearly landing limit for sustainable management of the Hilsa fishery in Bangladesh.

Landing, consumption, and DNA barcoding of commercial seabream (Perciformes: Sparidae) in Kuwait

Amani S. Y. Al-Zaidan et al.

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of Sparidae fisheries in the territorial waters of Kuwait, covering catch trends, consumer preferences, recreational fishing behavior, and molecular identification of fish species. Yellowfin seabream and Sparidentex hasta are the most favored commercial seabream species, with the majority of households primarily targeting these species for recreational fishing. There is also significant consumer demand for secondary seabream species that were not assessed in the study.
