87Sr/86Sr of coral reef carbonate strata as an indicator of global sea level fall: Evidence from a 928.75-m-long core in the South China Sea

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Reconstructing the timing of sea level fall is important for understanding the earth system during geological time. This study uses Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios and petrologic features of carbonate strata to investigate sea level fluctuations in the Xisha Islands. The results show that the Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio in the coral reef carbonate is an effective indicator of sea level fall, allowing for the identification of past sea level falls and their timing.

East Asian Monsoonal Climate Sensitivity Changed in the Late Pliocene in Response to Northern Hemisphere Glaciations

Ze Zhang et al.

Summary: Sedimentary archives from the Mio-Pliocene and Pleistocene periods in NE Tibet show a different response to orbital forcing. While the Mio-Pliocene records demonstrate a monotonic response dominated by eccentricity, the Pleistocene records display a more stochastic response that varies regionally and temporally. The transition between these two responses is attributed to the increase in Northern Hemisphere ice volume, leading to a decreased monsoonal rainfall in the late Pliocene and a heightened response to obliquity and climate stochasticity.

A review of orbital-scale monsoon variability and dynamics in East Asia during the Quaternary

Youbin Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the orbital-scale monsoon variability and dynamics in East Asia by comparing multiple proxies and modeling results. The findings reveal the diverse responses of proxy indicators to seasonal and annual changes in precipitation and temperature, contributing to the expression of Quaternary climate periodicities.

Early development of carbonate platform (Xisha Islands) in the northern South China Sea

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Sedimentological, paleontological, and geochemical data from core XK-1 on the Xisha Islands provides detailed documentation of early carbonate development around the Oligocene-Miocene transition in the northern South China Sea. The evolution of carbonate systems along the northern and southern margins of the South China Sea was influenced by tectonic subsidence, sea level fluctuations, and physical erosion. The onset of carbonate sedimentation in the SCS was shaped by sea level, local tectonics, and paleoclimatic conditions.

Holocene coral reef development in Chenhang Island, Northern South China Sea, and its record of sea level changes

Yifang Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the Holocene coral reef development in the northern South China Sea through a drill core, showing that the reef initiated around 7800 years BP and stopped vertical accretion at 3900 years BP due to sea level changes. The research suggests a rapid rise in relative sea level in the region between 7800 and 6000 years BP, followed by a slower rise and stabilization around 2 meters above the present mean sea level by 3900 years BP.

The effect of diagenesis on rare earth element geochemistry of the Quaternary carbonates at an isolated coral atoll in the South China Sea

Yun Luo et al.

Summary: The redox state of ancient seawater is crucial for understanding the variations in atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the geological past. Rare earth elements + Y (REY) in marine carbonates are considered a potential proxy for reconstructing paleoredox conditions. This study confirms the conservative behavior of REY in reefal carbonates during various diagenetic transformations under conditions of low terrigenous contaminations.

Reconstructing the evolution of ice sheets, sea level, and atmospheric CO2 during the past 3.6 million years

Constantijn J. Berends et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the evolution of ice sheets, global mean sea level, and atmospheric CO2 over the past 3.6 million years. Results show significant variations in CO2 during warmer-than-present climates in the late Pliocene, with relatively stable sea levels during the early glacial excursion period. The simulation for the Early Pleistocene aligns well with ice-core CO2 records and available sea-level proxy data.
