Different times, similar mechanism? Convergent patterns in light-induced phenotypic plasticity in Devonian and modern corals

Aleksander Majchrzyk et al.

Summary: Modern scleractinian corals and extinct Palaeozoic tabulate corals both exhibit high phenotypic plasticity and can alter their morphology in response to light intensity. This study provides evidence that Devonian tabulate corals, such as Roseoporella and Alveolites, showed a similar mechanism to modern scleractinians in changing their morphology depending on light conditions. This suggests that Palaeozoic tabulate corals shared functional characteristics with modern scleractinians.

Stromatoporoids and their symbionts in the upper Silurian of Gotland: Implications for palaeobiological and palaeoecological analysis

Stephen Kershaw

Summary: Stromatoporoids in Silurian shallow marine limestones from Gotland are commonly symbiotic with syringoporid tabulates, rugose corals, shelly tubes, and bioclaustrations. The occurrence of different symbionts in different facies suggests that specific taxonomic relationships are influenced by suitable substrates and biological factors. The growth patterns and interruption events of stromatoporoids and symbionts demonstrate complex controls on growth and unlikely enhancement of reef growth by symbionts.

Early life strategies and juvenile mortality in Favosites (Anthozoa, Tabulata) from the Middle Devonian of the Mader Basin (Anti-Atlas, Morocco)

Blazej Berkowski et al.

Summary: An exceptionally well-preserved population of numerous tiny, juvenile colonies of the tabulate coral Favosites goldfussi was discovered in Morocco. The studied coralla provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct the details of the astogeny, including the ontogeny of the protocorallite, and the process of offsetting of the first hysterocorallites. The studied population inhabited a relatively deep-water environment with specific growth strategies to stabilize their position on the seafloor.

From mud to limestone: Birth and growth of a giant reef in the Eifelian (Middle Devonian) of S Belgium

Julien Denayer

Summary: The Wancennes reef is a giant bioherm that developed over time, starting with the formation of a coverstone and a core, and then gradually evolving into a complete reef before ending with deposition of fine-grained siliciclastics. The development of the reef is influenced by sea level variations.

Coralliths of tabulate corals from the Devonian of the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland)

Mikolaj K. Zapalski et al.

Summary: The passage discusses tabulate corals, an extinct Palaeozoic group with diverse colony morphologies during the Silurian to Devonian peak of reef development. It introduces coralliths as a type of passive motile coral colonies constantly overturned by wave action or currents, with recent findings showing that they can also develop at greater depths in areas with specific conditions. The discovery of Devonian coralla in Poland suggests that tabulate corals exhibited a broader range of growth forms during the peak of reef development and adapted to various environments.

Middle Devonian brachiopod-hosted sclerobiont assemblage from the northern shelf of Gondwana (Mader Basin, Morocco): Diversity, colonization patterns and relation to coeval palaeocommunities

Michal Zaton et al.

Summary: A study on the brachiopod-hosted sclerobiont assemblage from the Middle Devonian in Morocco reveals a diverse community with at least 26 sclerobiont taxa. The dominant organisms in this community are encrusting organisms, such as bryozoans and foraminifers, while bioeroders are represented by Clionolithes and Oichnus species. The study suggests that the sclerobionts developed in a calm, euphotic marine environment with abundant shelly substrate available for colonization.

In the shadow of a giant reef: Palaeoecology of mesophotic coral communities from the Givetian of Anti-Atlas (Morocco)

Aleksander Majchrzyk et al.

Summary: One of the keys to the success of modern and ancient reef ecosystems is photosymbiosis. Mesophotic coral reef ecosystems (MCE) can survive in the lower part of the photic zone. Recent studies have found that MCEs existed as early as the middle Palaeozoic. The Aferdou el Mrakib reef in Morocco represents one of the southernmost Givetian reefs and provides insights into the paleoecology of these communities. The MCEs in the Aferdou el Mrakib reef show taxonomic and ecological similarities with reefs in Laurussia and southern China, indicating a cosmopolitan nature of Middle Devonian mesophotic ecosystems.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive and quantitative estimate of global temperature changes over the past 540 million years, combining various paleoclimate indicators. The global temperature model includes estimates of global average temperature, tropical temperatures, deep ocean temperatures, and polar temperatures. The history of global temperature changes has been summarized into 8 major climate modes, each consisting of warming and cooling episodes influenced by geological processes.

Unusual shallow water Devonian coral community from Queensland and its recent analogues from the inshore Great Barrier Reef

Mikolaj K. Zapalski et al.

Summary: Palaeozoic coral communities were dominated by two extinct coral groups, Tabulata and Rugosa. Despite not being closely related to modern Scleractinia, they display morphological convergence which suggests that similar environments may result in morphologically equivalent coral assemblages.
