Hydrogen production from oilfield wastewater by gasification in supercritical water with a continuous system

Zhiyong Peng et al.

Summary: The performance of oilfield wastewater supercritical water gasification (SCWG) was investigated in this study. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the feasibility of total gasification of oilfield wastewater in supercritical water (SCW) due to the inhibition of coke generation. The addition of Na2CO3 or K2CO3 facilitated steam reforming and water-gas shift reactions, leading to high H2 yields and carbon gasification efficiency (CE). This work can serve as the basis for the subsequent generation of multi-component supercritical thermal fluid (MCSCTF) using coupled hydrogen oxidation technology.

Implications on Feedstock Processing and Safety Issues for Semi-Batch Operations in Supercritical Water Gasification of Biomass

Summary: This study accurately evaluates the phenomenon of reactor plugging during SCWG of biomass with high moisture content, providing insights into the effects of water properties on mass and heat transfer. Comparison with SCWG of a biomass sample offers key insights for developing operational and control strategies to increase reliability. Additionally, a simplified model is presented to assess material integrity's effect on burst-event likelihood, suggesting safety protocols for continuous operation of SCWG.

Summary: Supercritical water gasification is a process for converting wet biomass into syngas without the need for energy-intensive pre-drying, aiming to obtain syngas rich in hydrogen. Studies have shifted from using model compounds to real biomass feedstock, investigating factors influencing hydrogen yields and the relationship between biomass components and hydrogen yields.
