The estimated impact of changes to otolith field-sampling and ageing effort on stock assessment inputs, outputs, and catch advice

Matthew R. Siskey et al.

Summary: This study developed a framework for evaluating the impact of survey sampling designs on stock assessments and found that decreasing the number of tows sampled led to an increase in the uncertainty of the overfishing limit (OFL). The study also found that reducing the number of otoliths per tow had a smaller impact on OFL uncertainty. Applying this framework to all monitored stocks is important to identify which stocks benefit the most from increased sampling or have the least impact on OFL uncertainty with reduced sampling.

Data weighting: An iterative process linking surveys, data synthesis, and population models to evaluate mis-specification

James T. Thorson et al.

Summary: Integrated stock assessments specify distributions for multiple data types and control the relative leverage of each datum. Unresolved questions include modeling age and length data, handling correlated residuals, efficiently communicating information between sampling and assessment teams, and addressing alternative hypotheses. This study proposes a categorization of assessment errors and offers practical recommendations for mitigating bias and imprecision in the assessment models.

Influence of sample size and number of age classes on characterization of ageing error in paired-age comparisons

Amy M. Schueller et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of ageing error is crucial for understanding age data in fisheries science and management. This study investigated the influence of sample size and number of age classes on ageing error diagnostics through simulation. The results showed that imprecision was less frequently identified at low to moderate levels of random error, while average coefficient of variation (ACV) was artificially increased in the presence of bias. Bias tests performed better using McNemar's and Evans & Hoenig methods compared to Bowker's. This study provides guidance for interpreting ageing error studies and their applications in stock assessment and management.
