Minghui Xiong et al.

Summary: Utilizing biochar-based catalysts synthesized from biomass waste has gained significant attention in waste recycling and environmental conservation. In this study, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles immobilized on biochar derived from rape straw were synthesized and applied successfully in degrading sulfamethoxazole. The composite catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, stability, and magnetic property for separation and recovery. The degradation process involved both radical and non-radical pathways, and a potential degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole was suggested. Overall, this CoFe2O4/biochar composite shows promise as an effective catalyst for environmental remediation.

New insights into interfacial interaction and nanoconfinement effect in synergistic oxidation-filtration via CoFe2O4-ceramic membrane activated peroxymonosulfate

Jiaxuan Yang et al.

Summary: Ceramic membranes incorporating CoFe2O4 (CoFeCM) were found to have excellent catalytic filtration performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The CoFeCM/PMS effectively removed toxic micropollutants and mitigated membrane fouling caused by organic pollutants. The oxidation-filtration process significantly improved the degradation of natural organic matter and reduced irreversible membrane fouling. The synergistic effects of nanoconfinement catalysis and repulsive interactions during oxidation-filtration transformed the dominant membrane fouling pattern.

Neglected but Efficient Electron Utilization Driven by Biochar- Coactivated Phenols and Peroxydisulfate: Polyphenol Accumulation Rather than Mineralization

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: We discovered and studied an efficient nonradical mechanism in biochar-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) systems. By increasing the pyrolysis temperature of biochar, we found that trichlorophenol degradation was enhanced while the production of radicals was inhibited, leading to a switch from radical-based to nonradical pathway. Low-cost and efficient Mn/CeO2 catalyst for photocatalytic VOCs degradation via scalable colloidal solution combustion synthesis method

Yingguang Zhang et al.

Summary: Colloidal solution combustion synthesis (CSCS) is a simple and efficient method for mass production of crystalline nanomaterials with tunable pore structure. In this study, mesoporous Mn/CeO2 catalysts were successfully fabricated using the CSCS method combined with a dip-coating process. The prepared catalysts exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the oxidation of toluene under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation. The analysis of intermediates suggested a possible degradation pathway. Physical and chemical characterization of the catalysts revealed that their properties play a crucial role in the photocatalytic activity. Compared to similar catalysts synthesized by other methods, the Mn/CeO2 catalysts demonstrated higher activity, attributed to the higher contents of specific species. This research demonstrated the effectiveness of the CSCS method coupled with a dip-coating process for the synthesis of high-performance catalysts.

Effective removal of tetracycline from water by catalytic peroxymonosulfate oxidation over Co@MoS2: Catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

Xi Li et al.

Summary: Co-based heterogeneous catalysts show high performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for antibiotic pollution control in water. However, their aggregation and loss of active components limit their application. In this study, a 3D rose-like MoS2 was synthesized to anchor Co in its special lamellar structure, resulting in high dispersion. 98.9% of tetracycline (TC) was removed within 60 min under neutral conditions. The key to PMS activation and TC degradation was the accelerated valence cycle between Co2+ and Co3+. The lamellar structure of MoS2 provided better stability and inhibited Co leaching.

CuFe2O4/CuO magnetic nano-composite activates PMS to remove ciprofloxacin: Ecotoxicity and DFT calculation

Bo He et al.

Summary: In this study, CuFe2O4 was attached to CuO using hydrothermal and high-temperature calcination methods. The (111) plane of CuO and (112) plane of CuFe2O4 formed a surface heterojunction, which facilitated the adsorption of PMS. The charge transfer and charge density in the CuFe2O4/CuO/PMS system were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental data showed that both nonradical singlet oxygen (1O2) and active radicals (center dot OH, center dot SO4-) were involved in the degradation of CIP. The degradation pathways and intermediates were proposed using Fukui index and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The study also evaluated the bioaccumulation factor and toxic effects of intermediates using toxicity calculation software. CuFe2O4/CuO demonstrated good reusability and stability. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of organic pollutants degradation using Fe-Cu catalyst and achieved a CIP removal rate of 86.67% under optimal conditions.
