Microscale evidence for and formation mechanisms of shear-strength anisotropy of a loess-paleosol sequence since the late Early Pleistocene: The case study of the Xiushidu profile, Southern Chinese loess Plateau

Qiying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shear-strength anisotropy and formation mechanisms of loess-paleosol sequences through direct shear tests and microstructural analysis. The results show that the shear strength of loess layers is greater along the vertical direction than the horizontal direction under different axial compression. The anisotropy is influenced by factors such as skeleton particles, contact relations, pore forms, and cementation degree.

Insight into the environmental significance of grain-size fractal and pedogenesis of a typical loess and paleosol sequence

Kai Hou et al.

Summary: The loess-paleosol sequence contains valuable climate change information. This study analyzed the characteristics of grain-size distribution, magnetic susceptibility, and element intensity in a typical loess-paleosol sequence. Fractal method was used to evaluate the relationship between fractal dimension and pedogenesis process. The study found that the fractal dimension can assess the fragmentation degree of particles and magnitude of energy events, and the combined application of fractal and reconstruction model can provide quantitative information about particle fragmentation and material change in the formation process of loess-paleosol.

Microstructure and permeability evolution of remolded loess with different dry densities under saturated seepage

Panpan Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the saturated seepage behavior of remolded loess with different dry densities is inconsistent. The saturated permeability of loess samples is influenced by dry density and seepage time, with low dry density leading to pore blockage and structural collapse, while high dry density increasing saturated permeability. Through SEM imaging, it was found that chemical reactions during seepage enlarged pores in the loess samples.

Development of water sensitivity index of loess from its mechanical properties

Yanqiu Leng et al.

Summary: The study found that the water sensitivity of loess is closely related to water content, with structural strength and deformation modulus decreasing with increasing water content. A new method to evaluate water sensitivity of loess was proposed based on parameters such as structural strength, deformation modulus, and shear strength.

Permeability and paleoenvironmental implications of loess-paleosol sequence from Jingyang Loess Plateau

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the permeability of loess layers is higher than that of paleosol layers, with a four-stage accumulation history in loess-paleosol sequences. Permeability changes are mainly controlled by pedogenesis under Quaternary climate conditions.

Anisotropic microstructure of loess-paleosol sequence and its significance for engineering and paleoclimate: A case study from Xiushidu (XSD) profile, southern Chinese Loess Plateau

Panpan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micromorphological characteristics of a loess-paleosol sequence in China, finding significant changes in the microstructure of loess with burial depth, while the changes in paleosol microstructure are minor. Loess and paleosol represent dry-cold and warm-humid climates respectively, aiding in paleoclimate reconstruction. The anisotropic engineering properties are controlled by sedimentation and pedogenesis in different paleoclimates.

Investigation of the cumulative influence of infiltration on the slope stability with a thick unsaturated zone

Xiaokun Hou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cumulative influence of infiltration on the stability of slopes with thick unsaturated zones, focusing on the Yanlian landslide induced by steam from heating pipelines. Field investigations, shear tests, and numerical simulations were conducted to document the variation in slope stability associated with cumulative infiltration. The results highlight the dynamic equilibrium state that the hydraulic condition reaches under cumulative infiltration conditions.

New insights into loess formation on the southern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau

Kai Hou et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau is crucial for studying global climate change and regional responses, with findings revealing ancient climatic information through microstructure analysis of loess and paleosols. The formation of loess layers is influenced by various transport and pedogenic forces, with a conceptual model established for the Weihe Basin. This research sheds light on regional climatic environmental evolution and the atmospheric circulation system in East Asia.

A new approach to evaluation of loess collapsibility based on quantitative analyses of colloid-clay coating with statistical methods

Ziyu Zheng et al.

Summary: The critical concern of collapsibility in loess lies in its micro-structural features, particularly the colloid-clay components. Previous research has been mainly qualitative with limited quantitative analysis, leaving the area of quantification of colloid-clay contents and spatial locations blank. This paper introduces a robust statistical method to extract microstructural parameters from SEM scans and explores correlations between collapsibility and these parameters, revealing positive effects of pore area ratios and particle circularity on loess collapsibility, as well as the importance of colloid-clay ratio and spatial distribution in describing collapsibility.

Evaluation of Structural Strength and Parameters of Collapsible Loess

Lei Pan et al.

Summary: Studies conducted on collapsible loess from Xinjiang, western China, using double-oedometer tests have revealed the relationship between structural strength and parameters of the loess with moisture content and vertical pressure variations. A model has been proposed to evaluate the structural strength and parameters of collapsible loess based on the damage caused by soaking on the loess anticompression capabilities. These findings are useful for evaluating the structural strength, stability, and water sensitivity of collapsible loess for geotechnical engineers.

Structural Characteristics of Natural Loess in Northwest China and its Effect on Shear Behavior

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between structure and shear behavior of natural loess in Northwest China through triaxial tests, SEM, and MIP. It was found that strength loss in loess soils is mainly due to changes in particle arrangement, breaking up, and pore size variation. There is a negative relationship between confining pressure and parameters characterizing particle morphology, as well as between pore area and deviating stress, which can be used to estimate the influence of structure on shear behavior.
