A phenomenological analysis of droplet shock-induced cavitation using a multiphase modeling approach

L. Biasiori-Poulanges et al.

Summary: Investigations of shock-induced cavitation within a droplet are highly challenging due to the multiphase nature of the mechanisms involved. A thermodynamically well-posed multiphase numerical model is introduced to account for phase compression and expansion, which relies on a finite pressure-relaxation rate formulation. The model is validated by comparing the numerical results with experimental data, and parametric simulations are conducted to determine the critical Mach number for cavitation occurrence and investigate its effects on the droplet flow field.

Geometry effects on the droplet shock-induced cavitation

K. Schmidmayer et al.

Summary: Assessment of geometry effects on shock-induced cavitation in droplets is conducted using a multiphase numerical model. The model considers phase compression, expansion, and heterogeneous nucleation. Phenomenological differences between column and droplet configurations are presented. The critical Mach number for cavitation appearance is determined and two cavitation regimes are identified based on the transmitted wavefront geometry.

A numerical assessment of shock-droplet interaction modeling including cavitation

R. W. Forehand et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wave phenomenon and possible cavitation when a droplet interacts with a shock through computational analysis. The volume-of-fluid method with and without a cavitation model is utilized. The results show good agreement between the computational and experimental data for a two-dimensional circular droplet. The study also analyzes the effects of interface curvature on the internal waves by considering a simplified square droplet and further extends the analysis to a three-dimensional spherical droplet. Additionally, two cavitation models are used to explore the likelihood of cavitation occurrence for raindrops of various sizes interacting with shock waves.

Study on characteristics of fragment size distribution generated via droplet breakup by high-speed gas flow

Tomohiro Kamiya et al.

Summary: In this study, the diameter of fragments formed by the disintegration of water droplets in high-speed gas flow was measured, and the time variation in the volume probability density distribution of fragment size, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), and mass median diameter (MMD) were calculated. The experimental results showed that the volume probability density could be described by a root-normal distribution for high Weber number conditions.

Jet Effusion from a Metal Droplet Irradiated by a Polarized Ultrashort Laser Pulse

S. Yu. Grigoryev et al.

Summary: Fragmentation of liquid-metal droplets irradiated by linearly and circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses is observed. The orientation of the resulting jets depends on the polarization of the laser pulse. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the direction of the jets is determined by the distribution of energy within the droplet.

Shock-induced cavitation and wavefront analysis inside a water droplet

Luc Biasiori-Poulanges et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a basic understanding of shock wave interaction with density inhomogeneities, focusing on the effects on a spherical water droplet. By using ray theory and a hydrodynamic code, it was found that ray calculations were consistent with more accurate numerical simulations in predicting wave patterns. The research highlighted the occurrence of cusp singularities and low-pressure zones inside the droplet, which may lead to cavitation depending on the pressure magnitude.

Experimental investigation of shock-induced tandem droplet breakup

Zhaoguang Wang et al.

Summary: In the shock-induced breakup of tandem water droplets, the separation distance has a significant impact on the intensity of the trailing droplet's breakup, particularly at lower Weber numbers and closer separation distances. The effects include delayed initial deformation, reduced maximum cross-stream diameter, and lowered drag coefficient. Additionally, when positioned close to the lead droplet, the trailing droplet exhibits unconventional breakup morphologies such as puncturing or coalescing.
