The Kuroshio Intrusion Into the South China Sea at Luzon Strait Can Be Remotely Influenced by the Downstream Intrusion Into the East China Sea

Yuhui Zhao et al.

Summary: The intrusion of the Kuroshio into the South China Sea through Luzon Strait is influenced by the downstream intrusion of the Kuroshio northeast of Taiwan into the East China Sea, with a time delay of about 220 days. This finding is revealed through a quantitative causality analysis based on first principles in physics and is motivated by the observation of wake patterns and their effects on the loop current. The two Kuroshio intrusions are connected by a coastal trapped wave mode propagating southward along eastern Taiwan coast with a period of 1.5 years.

Different mechanisms for the seasonal variations of the mesoscale eddy energy in the South China Sea

Yuhui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic processes responsible for seasonal variability of mesoscale eddies in the South China Sea using the MWT tool and canonical transfer theory, identifying different mechanisms controlling seasonal modulations of mesoscale eddies in different regions of the SCS. External wind forcing was found to influence seasonal eddy variability, but only in the NEN region.

On the Genesis of the South China Sea Mesoscale Eddies

Yuhui Zhao et al.

Summary: The climatology of mesoscale eddies in the upper layer of the South China Sea is investigated using ocean reanalysis data, and the study reveals the sources and sinks of eddy energy in different regions. The analysis shows that different mechanisms contribute to the generation and decay of eddies, and the interaction between mesoscale eddies and synoptic eddies plays a significant role in energy transfer.

Numerical Study of Topographic Effects on Wind-Driven Coastal Upwelling on the Scotian Shelf

Shiliang Shan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed three major coastal upwelling events on the Scotian Shelf in summer 2012 and found that wind impulse plays a major role in the initial response stage of upwelling events. Model results demonstrate that irregular coastline and rugged bathymetry play important roles in influencing the temporal and spatial evolution of the upwelling plume over the inner Scotian Shelf.

Numerical Study of Effects of Winds and Tides on Monthly-Mean Circulation and Hydrography over the Southwestern Scotian Shelf

Qiantong Pei et al.

Summary: A nested-grid modelling system was used to study the effects of winds and tides on the circulation and hydrography over the southwestern Scotian Shelf and surrounding areas in 2018. The model results showed that both winds and tides enhance vertical mixing, leading to changes in sea surface temperature and salinity. The wind-induced mixing was found to be more prominent in winter, while tides significantly influenced the hydrography in summer.

Multiscale Energy Transfers and Conversions of Kuroshio in Luzon Strait and Its Adjacent Regions

Zhongjie He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy transfers and conversions of Kuroshio in the Luzon Strait and its adjacent regions through multiscale energy and vorticity analysis. The results show that kinetic energy inverse cascades dominate the energy transfer east of Luzon, while potential energy cascades drive the accumulation of eddy energy in the South China Sea west of Luzon Strait. The study highlights the importance of local and non-local interactions in understanding the energy dynamics in these regions.

Investigating mesoscale eddy characteristics in the Luzon Strait region using altimetry

Corinne B. Trott et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the circulation in the northern South China Sea strongly responds to anticyclonic eddies shed from the Kuroshio intruding across Luzon Strait, especially those with significant westward propagation across the region at specific latitudes and longitudes. These eddies are most prominent during the monsoon seasons, and the majority of farthest westward-propagating eddies occur during winter.
