The impact of exercise and dietary interventions on circulating leptin and adiponectin in individuals who are overweight and those with obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Mousa Khalafi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis compared the effects of exercise training (Ex) with those of dietary interventions (DIs) and the effects of the combination of Ex and DI (Ex + DI) with those of Ex or DI alone on circulating leptin and adiponectin in individuals who are overweight and those with obesity. The results showed that DI decreased leptin concentration and increased adiponectin concentration compared with Ex alone, and Ex + DI achieved similar effects. However, Ex + DI did not increase adiponectin concentration and had inconsistent effects on leptin concentration compared with DI alone. Age, BMI, intervention duration, supervision type, study quality, and energy restriction were sources of heterogeneity.

Vitamin D Increases Irisin Serum Levels and the Expression of Its Precursor in Skeletal Muscle

Lorenzo Sanesi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on irisin serum levels in PHPT patients and conducted related experiments in cells. The results showed that vitamin D supplementation significantly increased irisin serum levels in PHPT patients, and in cells, vitamin D could regulate the expression of Fndc5/irisin by up-regulating Sirt1.

Childhood obesity: A review of current and future management options

Louise J. Apperley et al.

Summary: Childhood obesity is a growing concern with a significant impact on health. Current treatment focuses on lifestyle modifications, with pharmacotherapy and surgery reserved for difficult cases. Despite lagging behind adult obesity research, there are potential new therapies being trialled for childhood obesity, providing hope for more treatment options in the future.

Insulin resistance, leptin and adiponectin in lean and hypothyroid children and adolescents with obesity

Doaa El Amrousy et al.

Summary: This study found that insulin resistance and leptin levels increase in hypothyroid children and adolescents, especially those with obesity. Insulin resistance is positively correlated with TSH and BMI, but inversely correlated with fT3 and fT4 in hypothyroid children. There is no correlation between insulin resistance and leptin or adiponectin levels in children with hypothyroidism.

Plasma Myostatin Increases with Age in Male Youth and Negatively Correlates with Vitamin D in Severe Pediatric Obesity

Margot Baumgartner et al.

Summary: Obesity in childhood is associated with non-communicable diseases, but the mechanisms remain unclear. This explorative study found associations between myostatin and irisin and metabolic parameters in pediatric patients with severe obesity. Myostatin levels were positively correlated with age, pubertal stage, and insulin resistance, while irisin levels showed a positive correlation with HDL and a negative correlation with LDL cholesterol. Interestingly, myostatin levels were negatively correlated with vitamin D levels, independent of age and pubertal stage.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between BMI, sex hormones, leptin, and irisin in children and adolescents of different body types. Results showed significant differences in hormone levels between normal-weight and overweight/obese students, with the indirect effects of BMI on irisin via leptin being significant.

Irisin improves adiposity and exercise tolerance in a rat model of postmenopausal obesity through enhancing adipo-myocyte thermogenesis

Rehab E. Abo El Gheit et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential role of irisin in protecting against obesity in a postmenopausal rat model. The findings suggest that irisin treatment improves lipid profile and insulin resistance, and increases thermogenic parameters and energy expenditure in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue.

Summary: The study found that levels of adiponectin and myostatin in the body are associated with body composition and metabolic parameters in obese patients. Adiponectin levels are related to decreased muscle strength, while myostatin levels may be regulated by the percentage of body weight from appendicular lean mass.

Effects of increased physical activity and/or weight loss diet on serum myokine and adipokine levels in overweight adults with impaired glucose metabolism

Ozlem Tok et al.

Summary: The study investigated changes in serum levels of irisin, FGF21, visfatin, and FSTL1 in response to weight loss interventions in overweight subjects with impaired glucose metabolism. Results showed a decrease in these proteins after weight loss with both diet only and diet combined with physical activity interventions. The myokines were found to be related to glucose metabolism biomarkers in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism.

Summary: The study on schoolchildren in Taiwan found that there was no significant association between irisin levels and MetS components, insulin secretion, and resistance. Irisin levels showed different relationships with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in boys and girls. Further exploration is needed to understand the contrary relationship between irisin and FPG in different genders.

The Effect of a Life-Style Intervention Program of Diet and Exercise on Irisin and FGF-21 Concentrations in Children and Adolescents with Overweight and Obesity

Sofia Karampatsou et al.

Summary: The study showed that after a year of lifestyle intervention, there was a significant decrease in BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and Irisin concentrations in children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. Cardiometabolic risk factors improved, but there was no change in FGF-21 concentrations. Further research is needed to explore Irisin’s potential as a biomarker for tracking lifestyle interventions and predicting cardiometabolic risk factors.
