Diagenesis and petrophysics of Miocene sandstones within southern Apennines foreland, Italy

Massimo Civitelli et al.

Summary: Deep-marine clastic turbidite beds in the Southern Apennines record the tectonic phases of the region. The sandstone suites are divided into four petrofacies based on variations of detrital compositions. Petrophysical analysis reveals differences in porosity and permeability values among petrofacies, with the highest but less effective porosity associated with specific detrital compositions. The study highlights the importance of linking detrital modes to petrophysical parameters for understanding regional controls on reservoir properties.

The Maracangalha injectite complex: An overlooked hydrocarbon play in the Lower Cretaceous Reconcavo Basin, NE Brazil

Deise Marli da Silveira et al.

Summary: The Reconcavo Basin in Brazil is the third largest natural gas producer in the country, with the Maracangalha Formation holding the largest volumes of non-associated gas. However, the reservoirs in this basin are complex due to soft-sediment deformation processes that modify the depositional architecture and impact on the porous system. The cause of this deformation is still uncertain, with previous studies proposing both mass movements and post-depositional fluidization. This study aims to test these hypotheses by examining soft-sediment deformation structures in outcrop and core samples. The results suggest that upward movement of interstitial fluids was the main mechanism for remobilization, deformation, and mixing of sediments.
