Continuous Wheat/Soybean Cropping Influences Soybean Yield and Rhizosphere Microbial Community Structure and Function

Qing Sun et al.

Summary: Wheat/soybean rotation is an important double-cropping system in the Huang-Huai-Hai plain of China. Continuous soybean cropping could lead to soil quality deterioration and plant growth inhibition. This study compared the soybean yield and rhizosphere soil microbial community between continuous winter wheat/summer soybean and winter wheat/summer soybean-winter wheat/summer maize. The results showed that cropping rotation had a significant impact on soybean yield and soil fertility, and also affected the composition of the fungal community.

Study on the Potential for Stimulating Mulberry Growth and Drought Tolerance of Plant Growth-Promoting Fungi

Ting Ou et al.

Summary: The application of plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) can enhance the growth and drought tolerance of mulberry trees by increasing biomass, promoting nutrient absorption, and changing fungal community structures in the rhizosphere soils.

Plant Growth Stage Drives the Temporal and Spatial Dynamics of the Bacterial Microbiome in the Rhizosphere of Vigna subterranea

Caroline Fadeke Ajilogba et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial dynamics and function in the bulk and rhizosphere soils of Bambara groundnut at different growth stages. While the maturation stage showed a distinct community structure, other growth stages did not show significant differences. Potential plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria were found in higher abundance at different growth stages, with significant bacterial changes in the rhizosphere structure.

Effective and durable systemic wheat-induced resistance by a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria consortium of Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 and Arthrobacter spp. strain AA against Zymoseptoria tritici and drought stress

Erika Samain et al.

Summary: Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a positive effect on plant growth and disease resistance. This study found that a mixture of Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 and Arthrobacter spp. strain AA has a synergistic promotion effect on wheat growth, resistance to Zymoseptoria tritici, and drought tolerance.

Relationships between community composition, productivity and invasion resistance in semi-natural bacterial microcosms

Matt Lloyd Jones et al.

Summary: This study found that naturally occurring microbial communities with well-growing combinations of bacteria can drive invasion resistance, mirroring results seen in artificial communities grown in the lab. The results suggest that productivity is a key factor underpinning invasion resistance in naturally-occurring microbial communities.

Responses of Soil Fungal Communities to Lime Application in Wheat Fields in the Pacific Northwest

Chuntao Yin et al.

Summary: The study found that location and soil depth had a significant impact on the structure and composition of soil fungal communities, while the effect of lime application was relatively smaller. However, specific fungal taxa shifted in response to lime application, indicating that fungal community structure and composition, rather than diversity, were more influenced by location, soil depth, and lime application.

Rethinking Crop Nutrition in Times of Modern Microbiology: Innovative Biofertilizer Technologies

Eduardo K. Mitter et al.

Summary: Global population growth threatens food security due to ecosystem degradation, climate change, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss. Biofertilizers, living microbes that enhance plant nutrition, have the potential to reduce dependency on agrochemicals. Despite their ability to improve soil fertility, biofertilizers have not yet widely replaced conventional chemical fertilizers in commercial agriculture. Translating knowledge on microbiome functions and addressing key factors limiting successful field applications are essential to capitalize on plant nutrition in agroecosystems.
