Institutional Ownership and Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Comparative Study of the UK and the USA

Mohammed Benlemlih et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between institutional ownership and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using data from the UK and the USA. The findings show that institutional ownership is associated with lower GHG emissions, and this relationship is not significantly different between the two countries. The study also explores the possible channels through which institutional investors affect GHG emissions and examines the moderating effects of litigation risk, board gender diversity, and stewardship codes on this relationship.

Carbon performance, financial performance and market value: The moderating effect of pay incentives

Douglas A. Adu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interrelationships among carbon performance, CEO pay, executive compensation, financial performance, and market value. The findings suggest that actual carbon performance is negatively associated with financial performance and market value. Self-reported carbon performance has no effect on financial performance but has a positive impact on market value when coupled with carbon reduction initiatives. CEO pay and executive compensation moderate the association between self-reported carbon performance and financial performance and also moderate the relationship between self-reported carbon performance and market value. However, CEO pay and executive compensation do not have a moderating impact on the association between actual carbon performance and market value. The study highlights the symbolic nature of compensation incentives for self-reported carbon performance and emphasizes the need for actual carbon emission reduction efforts. These findings have important implications for policymakers.

How do board and ownership characteristics affect bank risk-taking? New evidence from sub-Saharan Africa

Douglas A. Adu

Summary: This study investigates the influence of board attributes, ownership structures, and other bank-specific factors on bank risk-taking using a sample of 220 banks in 16 sub-Saharan Africa countries for the years 2007-2018. The findings suggest that independent directors who are financial experts reduce bank risk-taking, the number of board meetings has a negative impact on bank risk-taking, government and foreign ownership encourage banks to take more risks, and institutional shareholder ownership influences bank risk-taking negatively.

Xin Cheng et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between common institutional ownership and corporate social responsibility (CSR) and finds a negative association between the two. Do ESG strategies enhance bank stability during financial turmoil? Evidence from Europe

Laura Chiaramonte et al.

Summary: The study finds that the total ESG score, as well as its sub-pillars, have a stabilizing effect on bank fragility, especially during financial crises, with higher ESG rated banks experiencing more significant stability improvements. Additionally, the longer the duration of ESG disclosures, the greater the benefits on stability. The linkages between ESG and bank stability vary significantly across banks' characteristics and operating environments, supporting regulatory efforts to enhance non-financial information disclosure.

Executive compensation and sustainable business practices: The moderating role of sustainability-based compensation

Douglas A. Adu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that CEO pay and executive compensation have a positive impact on sustainable business practices, except for CO2 reduction performance. It also shows that the pay-for-sustainability sensitivity is strengthened in firms with sustainability-based compensation policies. In addition, the study found that the effects of PSS and the moderation effect of SBC on PSS are more prominent in the symbolic construct of sustainable business practices.

Executive compensation, environmental performance, and sustainable banking: The moderating effect of governance mechanisms

Douglas A. Adu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of corporate governance disclosure on executive compensation and the moderating effect of corporate governance mechanisms on the pay-for-sustainability sensitivity. The findings reveal that well-governed banks offer lower compensation to executives and that executive compensation is positively associated with sustainable banking disclosures. Furthermore, executive compensation is negatively related to environmental performance. The results also demonstrate that the association between executive pay and sustainable banking performance is significantly influenced by corporate governance mechanisms, indicating that the pay-for-sustainability sensitivity improves in banks with high corporate governance quality.

Sustainable banking initiatives, environmental disclosure and financial performance: The moderating impact of corporate governance mechanisms

Douglas A. Adu

Summary: This study contributes to the sustainable development in business literature by examining the impact of a broad corporate governance disclosure index on sustainable banking initiatives and suggesting that quality corporate governance mechanisms play a key role in moderating the relationship between sustainability and performance in Sub-Saharan African banks. The findings imply that sustainable decision-making is positively influenced by corporate governance mechanisms, and that the sustainability-for-performance sensitivity is contingent on the quality of bank's corporate governance structures.

Green credit policy and corporate access to bank loans in China: The role of environmental disclosure and green innovation

Chao Xing et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of China's green credit policy by examining whether firms with better external environmental disclosure and internal green innovation are more likely to receive bank loans due to the policy. The results indicate that firms with higher environmental disclosure quality do not necessarily obtain more loans, and only green innovation promotes access to corporate loans. The prevalence of corporate green-washing in soft environmental disclosure is identified as a hindrance for enterprises to obtain more loans.
