Religion and enterprise pollution behavior: Evidence from China

Jianpei Li et al.

Summary: Based on data from over 40,000 religious sites of Buddhism and Taoism, Chinese industrial enterprises, and pollution emissions data, this study empirically analyzes the regulatory effect of religion on enterprises' pollution behavior in China. The findings show that religion can suppress pollutant emissions behavior, especially among private-owned enterprises, and promote green innovation. The environmental constraints of religion on enterprises are more evident in small and medium-sized enterprises, pollution-intensive enterprises, labor-intensive enterprises, and capital-intensive enterprises. When formal institutions are absent or ineffective, religion can serve as a substitutive mechanism.

Decentralization and local pollution activities: New quasi evidence from China

Yu Qi et al.

Summary: This study provides empirical evidence for the causal relationship between decentralization and local pollution in China. The findings show that the decentralization reform led to a significant increase in local pollution, worsening the overall environmental quality. While the reform generated net gains in social welfare, the environmental costs cannot be ignored.

Corporate responses to air quality regulation: Evidence from a regional environmental policy in China

Jie Mao et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the Action Plan for Air Pollution Prevention and Control on firms in China. The regulation aims to improve air quality in three regions. Analysis of a large sample of manufacturers shows that regulated firms with high emission intensity reduced waste gas emissions in response to the regulation. The firms' output did not decrease, indicating that the reduction was not driven by the scale effect but likely by the regulation's technique effect.

The role of Chinese fiscal decentralization in the governance of carbon emissions: perspectives from spatial effects decomposition and its heterogeneity

Yulan Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of fiscal decentralization on carbon emissions and carbon intensity in 30 Chinese provinces from 1997 to 2017. The results show an inverted N-shaped relationship between fiscal decentralization and carbon emissions, with the impacts mainly manifested through direct effects. Moreover, the study suggests that the influences of fiscal decentralization on carbon emissions and intensity vary among different geographical regions, highlighting the need for region-specific carbon reduction policies.

Does carbon financial market as an environmental regulation policy tool promote regional energy conservation and emission reduction? Empirical evidence from China

Guangtong Gu et al.

Summary: Based on panel data of cities in China, this study examines the energy conservation and emission reduction effects of the carbon financial market as an environmental regulation tool. The results show that the carbon market policy has a continuous positive impact on energy conservation and emission reduction, leading to a decline in energy consumption per unit of GDP. The analysis also reveals that pilot cities and non-pilot cities had no significant difference in energy consumption before the implementation of the carbon trading policy. Additionally, trajectory balancing method reveals that all pilot areas achieved energy conservation and emission reduction effects to different degrees, with particularly noticeable effects in Tianjin and Chongqing after policy implementation.

Import competition and the improvement in pollutant discharge from heterogeneous enterprises: Evidence from China

Changchang Wu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the impact of import competition on pollution emission intensity of manufacturing enterprises in China. The results show that import competition can inhibit the SO2 emission intensity of high-productivity manufacturing enterprises, and significantly impacts corporate pollution emission behavior in eastern regions and frontier industries. The main channels through which import competition improves pollution emissions of high-productivity manufacturing enterprises are the reallocation effect and the technology effect.

Environmental tax reform and environmental investment: A quasi-natural experiment based on China's Environmental Protection Tax Law

Guangqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of China's environmental tax implementation on firms' environmental investments using Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019. The results show a significant increase in firms' environmental investments after the implementation of the tax. The positive effect is more significant for state-owned companies and companies subject to high media attention, but there is no obvious difference between companies in regions with different levels of economic development. Further analysis reveals that government subsidies negatively affect firms' environmental investments, but the environmental tax reduces such subsidies and thus increases firms' environmental investments. Additionally, the results show that the environmental tax promotes firms' performance through increased environmental investments.

Environmental (de)centralization and local environmental governance: Evidence from a natural experiment in China

Gao Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of environmental (de)centralization on local governments' environmental governance, finding that the establishment of regional Supervision Centers for Environmental Protection significantly prompts firms to reduce emission pollution. The study also suggests that these centers facilitate information collection and supervision, leading to reduced pollutant generation and increased investment in pollution control by local firms. Moreover, they coordinate incentives on reducing firms' emissions across provincial boundaries. The study highlights the importance of effective incentive mechanisms and coordination in environmental governance.

Suling Feng et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of digital finance on green technology innovation using panel data from listed companies and cities in China. The results show that digital finance significantly promotes green technology innovation, especially for small-scale enterprises. Digital financial development can better promote green technology innovation in regions with higher pollutant emission intensity and stronger local government governance capacity. Manufacturing and nonstate economic development also contribute to the effectiveness of digital finance in promoting green technology innovation.
