Understanding the management of household food waste and its engineering for sustainable valorization- A state-of-the-art review

Dibyajyoti Haldar et al.

Summary: Increased urbanization and industrialization have led to higher energy demand, increased waste output, and negative environmental impacts. This highlights the need for effective solid-waste-management policies, particularly for food waste. The global generation of food waste is estimated at 1.6 gigatons per year, with an economic value of 750 billion USD. However, the diverse composition and varying moisture content of food waste pose challenges in transforming it into value-added products. This review comprehensively discusses the socio-economic challenges and environmental concerns associated with solid waste management, and critically reviews engineering aspects for efficient food waste management.

A review on contemporary approaches in enhancing the innate lipid content of yeast cell

M. A. Sundaramahalingam et al.

Summary: Industrialization has caused significant environmental hazards due to waste generation. The concept of waste to wealth has provided eco-economical suggestions for industries, including the production of valuable products such as energy, drugs, and materials through biorefinery processes. Among these suggestions, bio-lipids from microbial sources have gained attention. Yeast cells, due to their ability to accumulate a large amount of lipids, have become a focus of research in enhancing lipid content. Various strategies, such as the use of oleaginous yeast and genetically modified yeast, have been explored to improve lipid profiles. These lipid-bioproducts have also played a role in alternative energy production.

Critical challenges and technological breakthroughs in food waste hydrolysis and detoxification for fuels and chemicals production

Tirath Raj et al.

Summary: The global increase in population and economy has led to a rise in organic waste, particularly food waste. Improper disposal techniques have resulted in the wastage of carbohydrate-rich feedstocks, causing severe environmental issues. This review examines advanced valorization strategies that utilize organic material in food waste as a carbon source for microbial digestion and the generation of value-added compounds. It highlights the importance of pretreatment methods in extracting sugars for microbial digestion, while also addressing the challenges posed by toxins and inhibitors produced during pretreatment. The potential of food waste integrated biorefineries and future perspectives are also discussed.

Lipid production by Rhodosporidium toruloides from biodiesel-derived glycerol in shake flasks and bioreactor: Impact of initial C/N molar ratio and added onion-peel extract

Rosanina Filippousi et al.

Summary: Rhodosporidium toruloides NRRL Y-27012 grown in glycerol showed significant dry cell weight production regardless of the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio used. The optimum ratio was found to be 100 moles/moles, resulting in the highest dry cell weight and lipid content. The addition of onion peel extract reduced lipid production, with a greater impact seen in aseptic conditions. Scaling up the optimum trial in a batch bioreactor led to higher glycerol assimilation rate, biomass, and lipid production compared to shake flask trials.

Yangyang Liang et al.

Summary: Food waste has become a global issue, with over 80% of respondents in Macau considering it a serious problem. Main reasons for food waste include food exceeding expiration dates and ordering too much food. Most common wasted foods at home are vegetables, fruits, and snacks. Around 70% of respondents are willing to pay for separate food waste collection and treatment facilities, with an average WTP value of 42.5 MOP per household per month in Macau. Age, educational level, and income level were found to have significant impacts on respondents' willingness to pay for food waste management.
